Dying hair, wants layers... what should i do???

So, I'm dying my hair red. Vampire Red by Manic Panic to be exact. I have an afro and for a while i was just thinking about rockin a red afro, but now i think i want to flat iron it for the first time since I did the BC in april/may. The problem is that if i get it flat ironed i'm goin to want layers, but I don't know if my hair would look normal when i wear it in a fro when if i get layers. Would it be weird shaped? anyone know? or would it look normal?
