Girl...honestly, I'm getting pissed at a lot of people in the natural hair community. I saw this video the other day of a chick on YT who said she wasn't doing anymore product reviews because it was free advertising for the companies?! I was like, what ho? Soooo because they aren't paying you, you don't want to share information about products that may be beneficial to a newbie or transitioner? I understand that product reviews can help a company's sales, but it can also hurt - but that's the beauty of doing reviews "just because." You can give a blunt opinion of a product. While yes, people have come to me and said they will buy a product after I got good results, they will also say they decided not to buy it (MIXED CHICKS, lol) after I gave it a less than stellar review.

I really feel like there are a lot of people who are just getting greedy and want to make a buck off of things that should be free and we should be sharing amongst one another. Like a certain YouTuber who took down all her hair tutorials because she is putting them on DVD for people to buy. Or the women who made their own products that magically made their hair grow. Smh.

    Okay rant over.

It looks like another ingredient to look out for is Meadowfoam oil. That's in a lot of the bases that were posted.

In all fairness to NBD, I think that this is the only hair product that is a base. I think that all of the rest of her hair stuff is handmade. Can't speak on her face stuff. I still want to try her ayurvedic shampoo and conditioner.

I really hope this isn't true and I really hope that its not the person I use to watch:sad10:. What happened to just helping out your fellow man? I seriously doubt that people would spend money on a hair dvd when you can watch it for free on youtube. Hair tutorials on youtube are a dime a dozen everybody think they can do hair on there.

You're hitting the nail on the head, but the point is that this isnt something that you should be charging for at the level that they are. They aren't certified experts, stylists, or anything close to that. It's using a lil bit of artifice for greed. Pure and simple.

Yep.. I totally agree with the bolded... I said the exact same thing to my SO when we were talking about Afroveda's apparent greed and disregard for loyal customers and he called me a socialist! LOL

But realistically, I think she and others on YT are capitalizing on what some perceive to be a "trend" of going natural... African Export did a great YT video about "Bandwagons" the other day and how some folks will get duped b/c they need something to follow, to validate themselves as naturals... For those folks, they will buy hair tutorial dvds and "boutique" priced natural products because the buy into the marketing concept. The only difference between some of these bulk bases and the final product being sold by these companies is MARKETING... they take a formula that works and give it an image, a concept and some packaging that appeals to an audience.. in the case of Afroveda..it's the whole "Ayurveda" concept. But I think someone else commented on another thread about how much ayurvedic ingredients are really in the product, probably a marginal amount..

For those who will receive it, knowledge is power.. knowing that people who are claiming to be mixtresses are blending bases and spoiled milk has totally opened my eyes

On another note... I am shocked that the consultants’ report is on the world wide web!! LMAO..Airing her dirty draws and bidness out to competitors and customers. Daaayum! Where they do that at? Thanks for sharing Elle.. your research skills are to be commended ;-)

Just to sum up and clarify on the AV conditioners because several bases were found and I made an error on 2 of the conditioners.

    - Holy Basil, Coconut Moisture, & Neem - If you like these you can use this: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ingredientstodiefor.com%2Fitem.php%3Fitem_id%3D102%26amp%3Bcategory_id%3D53" class="Popup

    - Ashlii Amala Red Rasberry Mask has a base that can be found on the EW site. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.essentialwholesale.com%2Fs.nl%2Fsc.9%2Fcategory.107069%2F.f" class="Popup

    - If you like the The Tea Tree and Lemon, Ylang, CinnaMint, B.A.R.E, and possibly the Ananda (???) conditioners, you can use these bases: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bulkskincare.com%2FBulk-Tea-Tree-Hair-Conditioner-p%2F741gcot.htm" class="Popup

The Prana and Miss Bhuriti seem to be an EW base of some kind but I'm not sure. I'm not sure what base (if they are from a base) the Kissi and Nu Milk conditioners are.
It is an EW base. It has black willow bark extract in it. Just strip out all of the oils and voila!

Seee...lol, y'alls a mess, because I wasn't trying to blow anybody up today, I did enough of that yesterday!!

But I totally agree with with Nikki - some newbies feel so lost and aren't willing to sit down at the computer for a few hours and figure out some stuff, or ask SPECIFIC questions on a hair board so people can help them.

I saw African Export's video about jumping on bandwagons - however, I think her video, while it meant well, was a bit different than what we were talking about. For instance, she was saying that people don't need a steamer, or need to be product junkies. I mean...of course you don't. But, I'm not sure I have seen many people act like their hair wasn't going to grow without a steamer or a specific product. It's more these techniques and so called knowledge these ladies are relaying is what's a little much to me, that have many women talking about how something "saved" their hair or some mess like that...it's not that a "guru" helped you, it's that you were too lazy to help yourself.

Then, when you criticize them, here come the stans calling you a hater, and I'm like ummmm that's not haitng that stating facts. Trust me, I don't need to hate anyone, my first and foremost priority is growing out MY hair and doing what is best for ME.

And the funny thing is, unless you try to act like a know-it-all guru, half the time people won't even listen to you. Once this girl was talking about her hair being brittle and breaking, and asked for advice, and I told her that getting the proper amount of protein is KEY for hair, and that meat protein is a complete source of protein rather than veggie protein. Well, turns out homegirl was a vegetarian (She didn't initially say this, and I have nothing against vegetarianism, I was one for YEARS), and tries to have this debate with me about plant vs. animal protein, and I REALLY wanted to go on her like, "Well, do you boo. Your hair is what's breaking not mine!"

So...yea. I'm pretty much over a bunch of natural hair sh*t, except you ladies, because you rock my world.

Wowza! I am so happy with this thread. These are some amazing links. I LOOOOVE making my own products. I've been mixing my own butters and oils and using the raw ingredients. I bought one conditioner base and one shampoo base once and I didn't care for them.

However, I will now be using a lot of the bases yall listed here.

I'm more than a product Junky.... I'm a recipe junky.

And honestly, I don't find anything wrong with selling products with bases. I don't even care if you don't disclose it. Most major companies all use the same bases for products we use all the time. And honestly, I've tried to talk to ppl about how I made the hair moisturizers that I've made and they always cut me off and say that's too much info and they just want me to make them some. Not everyone is as interested in hair as WE are. They want nice hair but they don't want too much focus on it. And honestly it's a lot of work if you already have a ton of other interests and focuses.

Also let me add that a lot of these wholesale companies are FOR business to buy their stuff and sell it. Your average consumer is not gonna go online just to buy a half gallon of conditioner.

I don't think companies HAVE to disclose that they use a base... I just think it would be nice. Like if I decide to sell some of the stuff that I make, I'd include the fact that it is a base and I added the shea butter, coconut oil, palm butter, and fragrance.

i had no idea that so many natural hair companies were just using bases, doctoring a bit and collecting major dollars. geesh! i was thinking wow, this industry is really growing with knowledge.:book: i really gave people too much benefit of the doubt. :sad10:

i'm so glad i make my own products. i tried a couple of products in my early BC journey just to see what all the hype was about. :batman: every now and again, i decide to make a purchase as a treat to myself. this is really disheartening. :confused3:

now people are taking down vids and making dvds? wow, just wow:pig:

Ladies first let me say BRAVO!!
I saw when Elle started this thread yesterday and said to myself I will periodically check this to see what's up only to sign in today and see you all had a summit :notworthy:.

The info you all put together is both very informative and disturbing. There isn't integrity among some anymore unfortunately.

Exactly, and you dont even have to say its a base, but don't say you put in blood, sweat , tears and a few vital organs to bring the product to life. Just sayin...lol!

When we buy stuff in drug stores its never an issue because we already know it's nothing special, but the premise of buying organic and natural is different and I just expect more I guess.

+50 bajillion! I am SO tired of reading these "About Us" sections where chicks are like,

"I was so upset about my life. My hair was a mess, and nothing I could do would help me...I considered shaving my head and becoming a hermit because I was so ashamed of my hair. Then, I watched Tyra Banks and I was INSPIRED, I KNEW that I too, could have beautiful hair. I experimented with recipes day and night, milked cows myself, grew my very own aloe vera plants. Often, I would pass out in my kitchen from in the middle of mixing because I was SO dedicated - and then I had to start all over because I burned my mix on the stove. It was exhausting, but it was all worth it, so I could bring, quality, homemade, natural products to YOU, because kinky hair runs from anything that isn't all-natural, didn't you know that? Each jar of product is tinted pink because my blood is in every batch; I love what I have made so much that I wanted a little bit of myself in each product, no matter what home they find. NOW YOU can bask in natural hair bliss for only $18, plus $10 for shipping. Processing times are currently a month, because my doctor told me that I can't lose that much blood in such a short period of time and continue to live. Love and hair, Shimaka. xoxo"

And then you find out Shimaka took a EW base, some red food coloring, and added some Trader Joe's EVOO. Pass on that mess.

Like if I decide to sell some of the stuff that I make, I'd include the fact that it is a base and I added the shea butter, coconut oil, palm butter, and fragrance.

no...just like if there's a cake sale, does it matter if aunt sue or entemann's or betty crocker made it? it's still cake!! but dont lie and say IT'S FROM SCRATCH when it's not.

Afroveda's Holy Basil, Coconut Moisture, Neem, Kissi, Nu Milk, and Emu are made from this base. You can add ingredients or herbs as you like. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ingredientstodiefor.com%2Fitem.php%3Fitem_id%3D102%26amp%3Bcategory_id%3D53" class="Popup

Her other conditioners are from the Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol (together these are called Cetearyl, the name she uses), Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid type of base I mentioned above.

Mala also gets NatureMulse, the emulsifier she uses for her butters, from here as well. I bought some to experiment with. :evil4:

I think Mala uses a base for her butters too.
Only thing different in her butters are the oils/essential oil blend she uses.

and LOVE. yall keep forgetting the love she uses to make her butters. thats where the other $13 come from. love is expensive dammit.

Made me spit out my drink on my computer...DA*N You!! I thought LOVE dont cost a thing?!
