Hair Products and Their Bases

EllyEllyOxenFreeEllyEllyOxenFree Posts: 6,446Registered Users
First off...let me say that there is NOTHING wrong with a company using bases as long as they are up front with their customers. Sometimes, we don't feel like adding ingredients, or making sure something smells good, so we just go ahead and buy the final version. But, I do think it's important that consumers are aware of these bases in case they want to buy them and tweak to their own liking.

So, what bases do you know? I'll start.

- Wonder Curl Get Set Hair Jelly: Essential Wholesale Simple Aloe Jelly (with fragrance added) /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.essentialwholesale.com%2Fs.nl%2Fsc.9%2Fcategory.107166%2F.f" class="Popup

i've said it before and i'll say it again... :)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a company using bases (if that's their thing) and i don't believe a company has to divulge this information. there are plenty of companies who private label. i'm not just talking about hair products either. there are big companies who private label to small companies all the time.

take for instance infant (baby) formula. there is an infant formula act for all infant formula in the USA. lots of the top of the line standard and organic baby formula is made under one roof. it is sold for private label to various entities with various price points. it is not disclosed by the companies nor their websites.
LOIS (OS); cottony, TYPE 4 hair, fine/med strands; no cones bcz my hair hates them; last relaxer '98; now low porosity:?, ignores most natural hair rules; BC #8

faves: suave, v05 shampoo, conditioner (my own), raw shea butter, castor oil, peanut oil, aloe juice

I agree, but don't advertise yourself as a mixtress if you are not. Also, there are some companies who don't even tweak the product...they just re-package it and say they mixed it. What? That is a straight up lie. So, if people want to use the base they should at least know about it, IMHO.

Here's one that I recently discovered was a base. I LOVE this as a leave/styler combo so I was surprised to find it was a base. Not hating on the company that's selling it, but I can get it cheaper directly from supplier here.

There's an old thread on here (in one of the other sections of the board) that give a list of products that people love that are really bases so that you can buy the base directly cheaper.

That's the problem I have with a lot of these companies. When you start talking about your products are "made fresh in small batches" and ALL your products are bases (or dayum near all of them) then you honestly can't make that statement. Bases are made in BULK, they are not made in small batches.

Plus there is a difference between "private label agreements" and companies selling the same product manufactured in the same facility under different brands with different price points. Private label agreements are when a formulator stikes a deal with someone what a manufacturing facility to mass product a product for them. The formulator retains EXCLUSIVE rights to the formula, and the owner of the facility gets a flat manufacturing payment.

Companies selling products under multiple names and price points is the same as the difference between buying an Acura and a Honda....everyone knows that an Acura is really just a honda with a different engine and emblem, but they sell it as a totally different brand (Luxury) and at a much different price point.

    - Jasmine's Bath and Beauty Babassu Butter conditioner is just straight base with scent added. If you like that conditioner you can find it unscented here. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.organic-creations.com%2Fservlet%2Fthe-Hair-%2526-Body-Care-cln-Conditioner-Base%2FCategories" class="Popup

    - Hairveda's conditioners are from a base that is very popular - Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid. I found one version of the base here. You can just add scent and the oils you like. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wholesalesuppliesplus.com%2FProductDetail.aspx%3FCatalogID%3D2%26amp%3BGroupID%3D748%26amp%3BCategoryID%3D1788%26amp%3BProductID%3D4833%26amp%3BProductName%3DCrafters%2BChoice%25e2%2584%25a2%2B%2BHair%2BConditioner%2BConcentrate" class="Popup

Afroveda's Holy Basil, Coconut Moisture, Neem, Kissi, Nu Milk, and Emu are made from this base. You can add ingredients or herbs as you like. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ingredientstodiefor.com%2Fitem.php%3Fitem_id%3D102%26amp%3Bcategory_id%3D53" class="Popup

Her other conditioners are from the Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol (together these are called Cetearyl, the name she uses), Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid type of base I mentioned above.

Mala also gets NatureMulse, the emulsifier she uses for her butters, from here as well. I bought some to experiment with. :evil4:

I agree, and I mean I think it's a little insulting - there have been many times where I wish a certain ingredient was in a product but I don't want to ruin it, and later I find out it's just a base!! When a mixtress has a formulation, I'm like oooh okay, she must know what she is doing, that must be good. But if it's a base, why can't I play with it to tweak for my hair?

Only thing different in her butters are the oils/essential oil blend she uses.

Love EW.. but the shipping kills a lil, but the fact that you can bulk buy and it last a while makes it worth it.

Maybe it's my location, but I have 5 things in my cart that equal 5lbs and $50, and my shipping is $11.73. Isn't that pretty standard with a lot of the orders we make?

The Prana conditioner and the BARE conditioner are bases. I did a google on the ingredients minus the herbs and oils and I found several conditioners out there with the same exact base. What is disturbing is that Mala lists an ingredient called silica. In the other products with the same base this ingredient is listed as Dimethicone (from Silica). Does this mean that her conditoners have a cone in them and she is misleading customers???
Ah...to be a well pampered pootiecat. I can sleep on my owner's lap. Roll over on my back when I want my stomach rubbed. Purr with delight. Suddenly jump off and walk away for no reason. Not respond when I am called. Throw my leg up and lick with intense abandon. Sleep 85% of the time. Hang my head off the couch and view the world upside down.:laughing5:

The Prana conditioner and the BARE conditioner are bases. I did a google on the ingredients minus the herbs and oils and I found several conditioners out there with the same exact base. What is disturbing is that Mala lists an ingredient called silica. In the other products with the same base this ingredient is listed as Dimethicone (from Silica). Does this mean that her conditoners have a cone in them and she is misleading customers???

No, silica is good for hair, it's like horsetail - a strengthener. Can you list the ingredients though for the base? She might be...

+1. Plus, a dry blend containing fatty alcohols and an emulsifier isn't a base per se. You have to add the water, oils, herbs, preservative, etc yourself making it a unique formula. Bulk liquid, cream and butter bases are pre-fabricated formulas that already contain all the water, oils, herbs, preservative, etc needed. The customer only needs to add scent to finish. Naturmulse is an emulsifier like BTMS and a million others out there which every emulsion needs, commercial or handmade. Without an emulsifier the product will separate.

I pretty much figured that the entire "bare" line was nothing but bases. I never tried the Prana so I dunno the deal with that. The only thing I liked from her was the butters. If I find the base for them its OVER

:evil4:

Wait a dayum minute. You mean to tell me this heffa using BASES and trying to charge these high ass high end product prices?!?!?!? OH HELL TO THE NAW.

The link I gave above in my first post uses the SAME base...but she only charges $9 for an 8oz bottle. Mala must be out her dayum mind!

    She's a mess in a dress!

Thank you Elle for posting up this thread. At least now with the information out here people can make their own decisions on where to buy and control the ingredients they add if they want something different.
