I would imagine she had an eating disorder, in which case, what she looked like to you is the least of her problems.

There are many reasons why a person may look emaciated. Did it occur to you that maybe she was not trying to make a fashion statement, but was ill? Im not trying to be rude, but its something to think about.

Or maybe she's just naturally uber-skinny. It happens.

she looked kind of healthy but its not like i cud tell 2 much just looking @ her.she was laughing & all & didnt look weak.

you said "its not like i cud tell 2 much just looking @ her"

exactly. so why pass judgement on her? you don't know her or her circumstances. she could be ill, naturally thin and not trying to make a fashion statement.

...And would we be having this conversation if this same girl was 30 pounds overweight? Would it be OK to go on about how unattractive she was if that was the case? It is just an uncommon thing to see very thin people. I'd like to think that I look healthy, and I'm super thin. Plenty of men love it!!! I won't apologize to anyone for it either!

It's kind of unfair to suggest that because this girl was too thin for your taste that she was unattractive--I'm sure she had something attractive about her. Being attractive is not all about your size--isnt that what overweight people have been saying for years ?

exactly what i was thinking j'adore. if she was overweight no one would dare post something like that. i'm not thin nor overweight, but i just think that we shouldn't pass such harsh judgements on people based on their body types. just as there are many reasons why a person is overweight there are equally as many as to why they are underweight. stop judging people based on their looks and just accept them!

    darkalluringshadows,

Hi! I'm not sure I understand why you posted this on the fitness board. Are you warning people not to try to get too thin because it doesn't look good? I'm just wondering because I feel like I am missing the point of your post. If you are just looking for comments on skinnyness and its attractiveness/lack of attractiveness, I agree with the posters who said it's a good idea to try not to judge others on their weight & outer appearance. She could be sick or just naturally skinny. You can't really tell without knowing her.

Me neither. Some people are just very thin naturally. I have friends who are very thin and couldn't gain weight if they tried. That's just the way they look. Being thin naturally and being anorexic are two totally different things.

and at age 14, many girls are very thin if they've just had a major growth spurt. It's not deliberate.

Being too thin is not attractive, as is neither being too fat. Extremes, generally, are not appealing on either end of the continuum. I understand what the initial poster of this thread was getting at. A lot of teenage girls and young women live for thinness, guided by falsified and unrealistic notions of beauty in women's magazines, music videos and the media in general. When I go to the gym, I have seen emaciated looking women (note: not the naturally thin type, but those who look unhealthy and famished) spending an hour and a half on the treadmill or what have you.

    It is a legitimate concern.

I understand your viewpoint Diva. What I dont understand is how someone can pick a person that they don't know, and then use them as an example of how being too thin is not attractive.

This person could have been ill,or just naturally thin . There are a number of reasons why a person is thin. Not every thin person is a result of striving to be "attractive".

I agree, Isis. My best friend - a guy - has been skinny his entire life. He's about 6'3" and all of about 135 pounds. He can eat whatever he wants and still maintain his stick figure shape...genetics are at play, too. icon_smile.gif

...It sounds like a judgment to me!! IF anyone actually is thinner than you deem "attractive", then it doesnt look nice. We dont even know what this nameless, faceless young girl thinks anyway. That was an assumption--that she dieted down to that size. If you feel attractive at the size you are, then that is all that matters! icon_wink.gif

ok,i guess no1 gets this.i shudnt have ever said about that girl.what im trying 2 say is that being 2 thin isnt attractive,& i just realized that when i saw that REALLY thin girl.so what im trying 2 point out is that u shudnt make yourself SO thin when u CAN gain weight,im not talking about those who cant gain weight & genetics & all that...

If you diet down to nothing, yes, that is bad. But some people are just skinny, and they can't help it...I go to school with a girl who is about..5'4, and can't weigh more than 70 pounds. Not a chance. She eats though..she eats quite a bit. Her thigh leg is the size of my arm (ankle, my wrist, her thigh is my upper arm, ppl!! and my arms are small!!) Anyway...I'll creep out of this thread now icon_razz.gif

that was totally inappropriate - obviously you do, in fact, mean to be rude. next time proofread your responses for content (rudeness) and grammar.

I agree with you up to the point that unatural thinness is not as as attractive as the person may feel it is....But, anorexia is an illness, which may be triggered by dieting to become thin to look good (as you say), but it can start from many other causes, like stress, peer pressure, depression. You can not label anorexics as those in the wrong because they look unhealthy and not nice to look at to the outsider. Once people have become anorexic, it has gone beyond dieting etc, it is an illness just like a cold or a flu and I think you are confusing people who want to loose weight ('u shudnt go diet crazy & all ') with those who have the illness anorexia, which is much more severe.
