Hesh Heenara and Kapoor Kachli?

Hi Everybuddies!
I went to the Indian grocery the other day and picked up a box of kapoor kachli and heenara powder. With some research, I found that you're supposed to use them by making them into a paste and massaging it into your scalp and hair, leave on for a few minutes and then rinse out. But what I want to konw is whether or not you have to oil up your hair before using these powders... my mom grew up using shikakai powder and said that she only used it after her weekly oiling. For those of you who have used it, do you find that you need a pre-oiling before using these? And what are your experiences/opinions with these powders?
Thanks so much!
