My hair cut experience with Ann Marie...

DarbyDarby Posts: 1,025Registered Users
I had such a good time while there. My appointment was at 5:00 and I was back in my car at 6:30. She spent alot of time with me. But the time just flew by! I had no idea it was that late.
She started out by talking to me and asking me questions like, what did I have in mind for my hair, what products I use including shampoo, condish, styling etc.... What methods I use - EVERYTHING!
Then she gave me some tips to help me out. First, my previous hair cut was kinda bad. Too much length in the middle of my hair making it pull down. She asked me if I've ever used clips on top for lift and I told her no because they looked too complicated and she said she'd use them on me and show me how easy it is.
And it is! :)
She dry cut my hair and cut each individual curl.
BTW - she trains under Loraine Masey. She's flying back to New York here pretty soon to do some more stuff.
We talked about coloring and she said that curly hair needs to be colored FOR curly hair. It's not the same technique at all as straighties.
So, I made an appointment for that to be done later this month.
Products... She uses deva care and Aveda. She's going to start carrying the deva products in a couple of weeks. I told her I've tried so many products but nothing seems to be working all that great. She said you need to put them in the right way -- it makes a HUGE difference.
She told me to put products in sopping wet hair. Do not scrunch with micro towel until products are in. She scrunched in the styling products.
So, end result is good. I've never left a styling salon happy with my hair but this time I am very happy! I could have even gone shopping out in public and felt good about my hair!
She's big on using styling products that won't leave a build up behind. And she loves the no poo from deva care and the One C condish.
So, I'm going to do everything she suggested and hope I get decent hair.
She also showed me that I don't have to use a wide tooth comb anymore too. :)
She styled my hair in no time but I'm sure it will take me longer the first few times.

LOL -- Kind of makes it worth it uh? She doesn't have all the deva stuff yet. She said in a couple of weeks probably. And the salon that she's at right now won't be there any longer. I think she said at the end of this month. So, they all have to find new homes. She took all my info down and will let me know where she'll be. She said she has two possibilites.

Sounds great Darby! I'm so excited - I have an appointment with a Deva-trained stylist on Friday. It'll be the first time I've ever had my hair cut by someone who's done special training in cutting curly hair. I hope my experience is as good as yours was! I've never used Angell or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCare-Arc-AnGell-p-567.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacare-arc-angell]Arc Angell[/buylink] so I'm hoping she'll use one of those to style my hair too!

Got pics of your new cut yet?

Update: I haven't been able to get decent second day hair for the past couple of weeks and today when I woke up -- WOW!!!!! The greatest second day hair for me! I didn't have to do much at all to it. On the sides I had to spritz with a bit of water and then I diffused that part dry and then added a tiny, tiny amount of Aveda pomade and scrunched that in on the spritzed parts. That's it. It actually looks better today than yesterday.
Ann Marie did the clip thing on top and I still have lots of volume up there. I am SOOO happy. I hope I can duplicate this routine and get consistent results on my own. I'm such a retard when it comes to doing hair.
I ended up going to Aveda and getting the two styling products she used on my hair. I don't think I would have IF I hadn't gotten good second day hair results.
The good thing with Aveda is if you don't like it you can take it back.
Must have been a good omen too because they were having an anniversay thing there and giving free little massages and makeup make overs.
Well, I guess it wasn't good for my pocket book! I got a makeup make over and bought a few items.
But, I'm very happy with them. I'll try and get some pics posted this evening. Last night after I got home and ate dinner, I was too lazy and tired to get pics taken.

Oh yeah, so much more worth it! I hope she uses the Deva Sun Dryer on me!

My stylist won't be back from maternity leave until March, so I'm going to make an appointment with Anne Marie during this time!

ahhhh!!!! I decided to do my hair tonight for tomorrow instead of trying a new technique before work and good thing I did! I don't even want to admit to how many times I had to start over. I feel so retarded!!!!
I couldn't do the clips. They kept falling out and when I did get them to stay in, the top went completely FLAT -- the opposite of what Ann Marie did.
In the end.... I scrunched out the water (she told me not to), I used a wide tooth comb after condish (she told me not to) and I plopped and then diffused WITHOUT the stupid clips.
It doesn't look anything like when Ann Marie did it. I have curl formation but it's not as bouncy. I used the exact same products as she did. I'm so depressed about it.
Next time I go in I'm going to have her watch me do the clip thing and everything and see what I'm doing wrong.
I think I might start another post about clips since clip people probably won't see this.

:( There was a recent thread about bending the clips a bit, like a "(" so they stand up without falling over. I bent mine and they do stay up better. Can you call her and get in for a wuick appt just to style your hair, with her watching and helping? Hope so.

Just had my hair cut by Ann Marie and once again she did a terrific job! I have been coming down from Idaho for the last year and I have never left with a bad cut. She used the deva dryer on me and my hair has never been shinier and with absolutely no frizz. If she had one in stock I would have bought it. She has changed salons. She is now at 247 Salon near where she was before. You can find the address at cutcolorcurls.com. She is going to NY this week to finish her training with Lorraine. I highly recommend her to anyone in the Salt Lake area! Plan ahead, she books up really fast.

I'm so glad that you found someone so curl friendly Darby! I apologize for the guano, but would you (and any other that have gone to Ann Marie) mind sharing the specific routine of how she shampooed/styled ur hair, including what products she used? I am needing some new ideas! I am also looking for a good pomade that doesn't build up. Are you still liking the Aveda one you purchased? Thanks!

I was so excited to see this thread on Ann Marie. I have been going to her for about a year and half, and feel she is the best kept secret for curly hair in SLC, Utah!! Finally, a stylist with NC HAIR!!!

I first went to her after reading referrals from this site. I had just gotten my nc hair chemically straightened and hated it!! She babyed my hair while it grew out and she has done wonders to my curls. I have hated my hair for 49 years, and now I can say I am at peace with it, thanks to her. She is the first stylist where I love my hair after each appt. instead of having to head straight home to style it myself. (anyone relate??)

I am thrilled she is using the Deva line and studied in NYC with Lorraine. I love the Deva products, my hair has never been this healthy. She also uses some Aveda products on my hair like the Sap Moss for volume. She trys different methods in styling my hair, and will even email me new tips to try... how many stylist do that?!!! I love her and consider her a very good friend too. I wish I could post photos of my last cut and style, I will try to post some soon, I need help from my techno whiz kid.

Wow, I can't believe it! I can see her when I visit my mom in SLC this fall. My hometown. Site of some of the worst curly butchery hair cuts of my life. :x And the reason I didn't have my hair cut fo 6 whole years. Now I can wipe out all that trauma.
