Some of the wild cats species can cross-breed. The smaller wild cats can even cross-breed with domestic cats. Here's a siamese crossbred with a serval, called a Savannah cat, which some Einstein breeder thought would be a good idea for a new line of housecats (wouldn't want to see their furniture):

A quick google will come up with quite a few animals who can crossbreed with a different species:

    mule (donkey/horse)
    hinny (horse/donkey)
    zeedonk (zebra/horse)
    zorse (zebra/horse)
    liger (lion/tiger)
    tigon (tiger/lion)
    leopon (leopard/lion)
    jaglion (jaguar/lion)
    pumapard (puma/leopard)
    Bengal cat (leopard cat/domestic cat)
    savannah cat (serval/domestic cat)
    wholphin (false killer whale/bottlenose dolphin)
    cama (camel/llama)
    beefalo (American bison/domestic cow)
    yakow (yak/domestic cow)
grolar or pizzly bear (polar bear/grizzly bear)

"Zedonk"? It's a cute hybrid but the name sure isn't.

    I like "Zonkey" better. :toothy8:

Lots of different species can crossbreed but their offspring are always sterile (infertile). Mules are half donkey, half horse.

Not always. Wolves and dogs are different species and they can crossbreed and they are not sterile. The closer the genetic ties between species, the more likely the offspring will be fertile.

Most likely momma horse was a NICE horse - that's a good looking unusual cross! (And judging by the height of the butt, not fully grown yet... not as nice looking as I think if it is full grown. ;) )

I think this is so interesting! On a similar note, I was excited to learn that genetics may bring the auroch back to life, and they've been extinct for about 400 years.

I was born to be a pessimist. My blood type is B Negative.

Ugh. This makes me seriously horrified. :pukeleft:

Isn't there some awful scifi movie about this, called something like the Island of Dr. Moreau - I probably have the name wrong but I've had too much pizza and beer to look it up.

"Zonkey" is sooo cute! Another option would be Debra, but that's my friend's name, so not going there. ;)
