Fine Haired Protein Lovers, Get in Here :)

So Ladies,

I've been experimenting with that devil protein, and I am in lurv.:tongue1:

This year, when my hair started feeling too soft, weightless, and felt like water itself when wet, I realized that my hair was probably over-moisturized. So I've eased protein into my regimen these past few months and it has had a wonderful effect on my hair.

So to the fine haired ladies, do you use protein? What protein products are you currently using and how do you use them?

In my arsenal:

Giovanni 50/50 Hydrating Calming Conditioner: I could never find the protein in the ingredients of this product, but folks on the board said it had protein in it. It was the first product I started using consistently and I used it to condition and detangle once a week.

Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment: I use this once a week as my "prepoo" I suppose. I put it on dry/dampish hair, cover, and let it set for about 15-20 minutes. Then I rinse, wash, condition, and detangle as usual. My hair feels soft when wet, but maintains a firmness. Also, barely any hair comes out when detangling with my brush.

Chi Keratin Mist: Only been using this for two weeks. I used it for two days straight and this morning, i thought the dry brittleness was a sign I had overdone it. But after rinsing hair in shower and applying long aid, I can honestly say my hair looks and feels as good as it's gonna get.
4a, fine coils. low/med porosity. "It's springy. Like a slinky."--My Lil' Cousin

I use products on 90% dry hair.
Wash: Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castille Soap.
Conditioner: Tigi Bedhead Moisture Maniac/Suave Humectants
Moisturizers: Long Aid
Styler: Ecostyler Clear/ Vitamin E Oil

Good topic! Although I did find out via Ecostyler Olive Oil gel that there is such a thing as too much protein, even for my protein loving hair.

The other products I use that have protein or act as proteins are:

Hask Henna & Placenta Condish (thick but has good slip)

Nature's Gate Biotin Condish, NG Henna Condish

    Amla ( amla > :love6: < me lol)

Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea Restructurizer

There's more protein products out there I would like to try, but so far these are ones that have worked well for me.

    here... :blob2:

i knew my hair loved (or at least was supposed to love protein) after doing research on fine haired curlies. i used to make sure i got protein at least once per week. i had an episode with shedding last winter. i upped my protein usage to everyday and have never looked back. it stopped my shedding in its tracks. now when i detangle, there is barely any hair in my brush or comb!

i look for products with some sort of hydrolyzed protein (silk, milk, keratin, rice, oats, wheat, soy). My hair feels much stronger using protein based products.

I stay away from animal based protein because more than likely it is sourced from placenta.

EO brand conditioner is protein heavy. My hair absolutely loves this. tigi bedhead moisture maniac, tigi oatmeal honey, aubrey organics and trader joe's nourish spa fit the bill for me!

My hair loves protein, too. After I used Aphogee 2 step, my curls looked so amazing, but I haven't used it in months (because of the smell). I recently tried Giovanni's Smooth as Silk Protein Infusion packet and it worked out really well. I don't know if that's the same thing as the Smooth as Silk in the bottle though. Like BekkaPoo, I also have the Aphogee Green Tea Keratin Spray. I use it to perk my curls up before I use gel.

trying to solve my breakage problem i added AOGPB to my regimen (DT every other week, though i might up it to once a week) this stuff stinks but works wonders!!
Between my DT with that & that Cv ayurvedic bar my shedding & breakage has decreased dramatically!

I washed my hair with the ayurvedic bar twice since i got it & normally after i detangle, ill pull out my shed hairs and gather them into a ball so they dont go down the drain, the last two times ive washed i only had about 5 or 6 hairs!!!

im looking to replace the stanky aogpb! So I ordered Mozekes Carrot Protein mask & if i dont like that i plan to try GVP Joico KPak (someone is sending me a free one) & lastly spiral solutions!

& all this time people had me scared of protein, im fine haired AND heat damaged... this stuff is my friend!

Another fine-haired girl here. I also use AOGPB. I didn't mind the smell as much as the TJ Nourish, but I love it! My shedding has almost stopped after 2 applications. I may have to try others if my hair gets used to it, but right now I am on cloud nine! In addition to using, YT Cucumbers for my co-washes and detangling, my sessions have been a breeze! I am estatic!

And I was like Reeky, afraid to use it cuz people had me scurred, lol!

I don't do protein specific treatments, but most of my moisturizing conditioners also have protein, and my favorite deep treatment has 5 proteins but is still moisturizing and detangling (Mop Top).

My hair loves some proteins and actually thrives on them. And to think at one time I thought I was protein sensitive. Anyway seems like most of my products have a touch of protein but when I need an extra boost, usually every 2 - 3 months, I use Hairveda's MethiSativa System.

I have to limit my use of wheat protein. My hair reacts very strongly to it but everything else my hair loves - keratin, silk, soy.

For a while there I was going overboard with protein avoidance but my dryness and breakage issues only went away with upping my protein use.

ETA: In winter I loved using Mop Top and Robert Craig conditioners. Now that it's summer time I'm trying to save some money by using lighter Elucence stuff. The MBC makes a great leave in as well as rinse out. Mozeke's Carrot & Protein Mask is great too!

Count me in. I am also a fine haired lady who loves protein. So why have I been slacking? My hair loves AOGPB, and I should use it once a week, maybe more, however I have been doing it maybe once a month.
I'm also interested in trying out the products you all have recommended.
I am SO glad I'm on this site to learn the importance of moisture/protein balance.:thumbright:

ladies if you have a ross, tj maxx or marshalls, often you can find liter bottles of EO products, tigi bedhead moisture maniac and giovanni conditioners for $8.99 or $12.99.

some of the EO products conditioners have silicones so you will need to look at the ingredients if you avoid silicones (i do!).

the EO ones i have tried have been vanilla citrus, lavender, lemon verbena.

I'm sensative to strong scents so I'm not a fan of the smell of aubrey organics products but they work so well on my hair. I use them as overnight dcs before I wash my hair and then use kbb luscious locks hair mask (which has almost no scent to it) as a dc after I shampoo. By the time I'm done the scent is pretty much gone.

    To answer the original question...

I'm a fine haired girl and always thought my hair was protein sensative but recently found it loves light to med protein regularly instead of the strong stuff. I use Ao gpb after I straighten which is like once every 2-3 wks, and I use giovanni direct leave in at every wash which some say is a light protein.
I also henna once a month. Its not a protein perse but it strengthens the hair like one.

I love Spiral Solutions Repairing Protein Treatment:love5: It contains keratin, wheat, rice, oat and jojoba proteins. I use it twice a month for that extra protein boost that my hair needs to stay good & strong. I like that it only takes 5 mins. to work but you can leave in on longer.

I've been using my homemade banana+avocado DT for protein...GVP Kpak when I'm too lazy to make my other concoction. My hair is in love. I've noticed though...when I use leave-in products with protein on my hair, she no likey that. Anyone else experience that? I was in love with my Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter moisturizer but I think I have to choose between leave-in or rinse out protein.

I've been considering ayurvedic proteins like henna, amla and cassia. Trying to decide since I just bleached my hair and already want to grow it out :\

my fine strands can't get enough protein. i use it almost every time i wash. currently i'm alternating using nexxus emergencee, roux mendex, and AO GPB. However, I still get breakage on my ends and it's making me mad.

thanks for this thread bc now i have plenty of other protein treatments to try! i'd like to try aphogee bc i think i need an intense treatment, but i'm scared of its notoriously stinky smell!

I sometimes use Ion Repair Solutions Reconstructor Treatment (from Sally's). I used it every other week for a bit while my hair was recovering from damage from weather (cold and sun) or swimming and now only use it once a month or as needed.

Its keratin based and its one of the best I've used so far.

LMBO@ Reeky! I did use the AOGPB on dry hair, but I also smelled the scent later in the day. It's like a strong ginger scent and every now and again I was like 'what's that smell??? Oh, it's me!' But I tell you that TJ Nourish just smelled like old lady perfume and made me wanna gag! I thought for a min. that I was pregnant (but no dice). I had to take the other bottle back, lol.

Thanks ladies for all of the recommendations, I know what to try when my hair gets used to the AOGPB.

Ha! My hair must be protein anemic because that Hydrolized wheat protein is the main reason I use ecostyler consistently. I've been using the olive oil one for a month. I think I love it better than the clear for styling purposes, but the clear was definitely better with keeping the protein-moisture balance. I guess that wee bit of industrial olive oil in the product is tipping my hair over the moisture edge.

Right!? So I didn't want to mention the decrease in shed hairs because I cannot logically understand how a product can affect my actual hair follicles...but...it's true! I usually can't wait to finish detangling and washing just to see how clean my bathtub and brushes are. I wonder how and why protein stops shedding. Anyone know?

I've never heard of this but will definitely give it a try. Is it pretty inexpensive? How often do you use it? I love aveda thus far, but $26 for a small bottle that lasts 4 washes. Yeah...looking into economical alternatives.

Love this thread. I thought I was protein sensitive the first 6 months too. Then I read struttswife book and realized I had fine thick hair. So I have been in love with protein ever since that ah-ha moment.

    I use protein something everyday.

I have been playing with Curl Junkie Intense Fix and I like it a lot. It's expensive for the size bottle; so I will definately be checking out these other products.

I also use Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Cream. It has protein in it as well. My curls love this stuff. I usually use it under [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]kccc[/buylink].

This is the thread for me. . . I use AO GPB and AO Swimmer's. I have noticed that the Swimmer's (vegan alternative to GPB) is a bit more effective even than the AOGPB. I discovered an article while surfing the other day which noted that vegetable protein was better at penetrating the hair shaft or something along those lines. My experience supported this but it was nice to have scientific evidence!

Also, I SWEAR by AO Blue Green Algae Protein Mask. It is expensive but sooo worth it. I use it sparingly to "boost" the Swimmers or give a protein boost to a moisturizing conditioner when needed. I use it straight if I have been slacking on the protein treatments (no, never that!) Honestly, I would use this in lieu of Henna if I did not have gray hairs to cover.

It took me waaay too long to discover how much my fine, delicate hair needed protein. I think I am going to finally buy that ebook as well. It sounds like a wealth of information.
