Protein-Moisture Balancing Act?

Hello All! :wave:
Sometimes, I wonder if my hair gets over moisturized because of my protein sensitivity. I know for a fact that my hair get's hard and brittle when I use products with high protein content...but sometimes (like now!) my hair gets limp and too soft (didn't know that was possible!) and won't show it's natural curl or even hold the pattern of a braid/twistout.

Have any of you ladies dealt with this before? Is it just me?

    Hi!!! I haven't really had limp limp hair, but when I do... I low poo or no poo and it usually snaps out of it....

    BUT YES, I have been wondering a lot lately about what the proper balance is... but just can't bring myself to use protein. I find when I use a product that has protein, I have great hair one day, and the 2nd day using the same product all heck breaks loose!!!!

    So maybe a protein conditioner (a mild one) ...once a month maybe tops for me? Not ready to try it tho! ;-)

    You could be having that kind of reaction if you are using Deva products (shown in your sig) because most Deva products contains HOPS which is considered a protein. You may be getting enough protein already. :dontknow:

    Thank you so much for both of your replies! I think I've figured out the problem now :) I've been using a new leave-in condish (Jane Carter Revitalizing) because I was worried that [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Oyin-Handmade-Juices--Berries-p-757.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=oyin-juices-and-berries-nourishing-herbal-leavein]Oyin's Juices & Berries[/buylink] had too much glycerin for the humid weather. JC's spritz has hops (which I never would have known was a protein if Jusduit hadn't responded to you CurrlyQ!!). Then, because I was examining the ingredients more closely I realized that the first 10 or so of them were plant extracts! (which are proteins, yes?) Ay yi yi...lol so I think the problem is protein overload after all. Reading is fundamental :p

    I think the original question is still a good one, though. I've decided to not worry about the balance until/unless it comes up in which case I may try the GVP K-pak. Thanks so much you guys...I was ready to start panicking:banghead:

    Thanks Jusduit!! Yeah I probably should change my signature.. right now I basically only using the Deva Curl One and I'm currently playing around with FSG.. put the angell away for a while. I hope I come up with some FSG that works for me.... Sigh.. So much cheaper...

    I'm gonna go check my bottle and see if there is HOPs in there! Thanks for the heads up! I hope not, I love that condish!! eeeek!

    I agree, it's an excellent concern! Moisture/protein balance is a key factor in getting our hair to behave! LOL

    I used CJ Curl Fix for a PT last week and my hair no longer looked limp! I followed it with CJ Rehab and my hair was once again super wavy and even almost spirally!

    rymorg2 told me that since I'm in the sun a lot (work at a summer day camp) and swim 2x/wk that my hair may be more porous and my products (condishes and stylers) were mostly protein free. I had done a PT with Darcy's pumpkin seed and my hair HATED it! However the CF worked wonders!

    I plan on doing a PT+DT once a week or so until the summer camp ends. Once school starts again, I'll probably cut it down to 1-2x/month unless my hair starts looking droopy again.
    Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
    cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

    I only recently figured out my protein/moisture balance. I use just a dollop of a light protein conditioner as a rinse-out and I only do this about once per month. I use either Giovanni or Jane Carter. Or I might cowash once per month with Suave Naturals instead of V05. The rest of the time I load on protein-free moisturizing conditioners. My hair tends towards dryness but is very coarse so this particular protein/moisture balance works for me.

    I use some kind of protein once a week. In winter I use Rober Craig conditioner daily and had no problems because my stylers were so moisturizing.

    Also, within a certain product I look to see if it is already balanced. For every protein I look for some kind of humectant. Take Mop Top for example - they use 3-4 proteins and balance that by adding 3-4 humectants.

    But I did want to say similar to Curly4days, when I use LA Looks Curl gel (has protein) the first day my hair loves it, second and third day terrible! So now I experimented and when I thought my hair was a little weird and flatish I just used this gel and made sure I did not use it again. So I guess what I'm saying is I can even do a protein treatment simply by using a protein gel. As long as it's not Wheat Protein.

    I do a very light protein treatment once a month. And by light I mean I do an overnight DT with a conditioner with protein lower on the ingredient list. The rest of the time I DT with a moisturizing conditioner sans protein of any kind. I also don't use any other products with protein in them (i.e. gels, shampoos) and this keeps my hair happy. The once-a-month, "perk me up" as I call it, is enough for my hair. You might want to try that? :dontknow:

    I see some great tips!!

    My hair hates protein, so once a month is fine for me. I just jumped on the henna bandwagon. I will be doing a henna gloss once a month in place of protein treatments. All other times it will be strictly moisturizing.

    Quick question- so protein overload can lead to flat, no curl pattern as well?

    I think that's what I'm going through at the moment and I need some of my curls back.
