Curly ASIAN hair, am I the only one?

mimikomimiko Registered Users Posts: 120
I'm somewhat new to the forums, and I have yet to find another asian with curly curls. There are plenty of mixes but I don't see anyone that I can relate my hair to :(

It's always awkward telling people that both of my parents and their parents all originated from Taiwan/China. Then I get stared at like I'm some kind of goddam unicorn. Tell me I'm not the only one! I know Sandra O has curly hair and she's asian, right?

It's really nice to know there are asians out there that don't always have pin straight hair :D my mom has big waves in her hair, and my dad has curly hair, but he always brushes it into a fro so I never knew that my hair could clump into nice curls. Do people ask if you get it permed? I get that sometimes, and I used to spend hundreds of dollars getting it STRAIGHT by thermal reconditioning lol.

I'm Korean and have lazy waves and I have a lot of it! Without product my hair gets super poufy and kind of triangle-like. I only recently have been trying to tame it into some sort of waves.

I'm adopted so I have no idea if my parents had wavy/curly hair.

Haha, my dad is Taiwanese as well and curly hair runs in the family. But my mom for the most part has slightly wavy, more straight hair. So half of my siblings have curly/wavy hair, and the other half have straight hair. However my hair is mostly thick than curly.

Most of my teachers, obviously unaccustomed to seeing an asian with anything but straight hair, nickname me Sandra Oh. It used to be okay-funny at first but then random teachers have been coming up to me to yell that at me.
(oh and, its my first day here! :D)

i'm asian (indian) with wavy/curly hair.

i have to say, i went to middle school and high school with tons of asian people, and i've noticed that a lot of the girls that had the super stick straight hair would either flat iron or get it japanese straightened. there are many asian girls that have at least a bit of a wave to their hair. so you're definitely not alone!

btw, if that's you in your avatar, your hair looks lovely :)

I think there's an Indian who's got waves or curls on here as well - I can't remember her name now.

Personally, my friend who's Indian and her mum both have waves and curls. Her mum nearly has 4a hair!

Just more proof that waves and curls aren't race specific. :-)

Curly and wavy Asians aren't actually as rare as people let it on to be, I think.
We live in Utah so my mom's hair is very straight here because of the dryness, but it DOES get quite a bit of volume. It doesn't have that smooth, slick texture that Asian models seem to have.
Anyways, yes, tons of people ask me if I've gotten a perm.
I don't even know if it counts as ASKING, actually -- because they say it somewhere along the lines of, "You have a perm... right?"
Hahah! I get it all the time.

    Hi!
I am Taiwanese as well! You're the first Chinese curly I've heard of (other than my family!) DH calls me a mutant. LOL! Both my mom and grandmother had big curly hair. If it's any consolation, it thins and straightens out with age. People always ask if I'm mixed. One time at a Mexican restaurant, the waitress just started speaking to me in Spanish. She seemed surprised that I couldn't understand her!

I've always wanted a clean, short, straight bob haircut, but CG has taught me to appreciate my curls more. Diana Ross, eat your heart out -- no weave!!

I have gotten this all the time! Apparently I look very Hispanic. I get several approaches a month.

I've been taking Spanish for five years now (coincidence? =]) and I can usually understand what's being said, but I panic and just answer in English anyways. Needless to say... nobody walks out of these encounters without being confused.

I'm Chinese by ethnicity, living in Singapore. I have curly hair and on a good hair day, it's fairly similar to yours. I get my curly hair from my dad, most of his family have curly hair although they tend to just either brush it out (frizz paradise) or the guys will cut it super short.

I used to straighten my hair until I decided a few months back to embrace my curls, this forum has been a huge help with that. Everyone I know was surprised how curly my hair was, even my mum.

*waves to en-q* Hi there I used to live in Singapore too but since moved to Texas!

I'm ethnically Chinese but my great-grandfather is of Indonesian origin so that makes me part Indonesian I guess. My dad and his aunts all have got wavy to curly hair to some extent and so do I. I'm the only one among my siblings (there are 3 of us) to have curly hair though.

I used to straighten it but now am too lazy to visit the hairdresser's for 5 hours just to straighten it. Besides, I think I prefer my hair curly.

Since moving to Texas I've been mistaken for being hispanic though..and I don't speak a word of Spanish so it gets awkward..

*wave back to hecatemel* hello! it's great to find someone else from Singapore, even if you're not living here now. :)

I used to be able to almost straighten my hair with flat iron and a brush, it would be good for a few hours then pouf up into a frizzy mess by the end of the day. I finally gave up when I realized my hair was getting more unruly and extremely damaged.

I'm happier with my hair now that I know what to do to keep the curls looking good thanks to the people on this forum!
