fashion dilemma--wedding (not mine!)

VerityVerity Registered Users Posts: 616 Curl Neophyte
I will be attending my niece's wedding in September. It will be at the beach, though I'm not sure it will be on the beach. Still, I'm thinking it will be more casual than the typical church wedding.

I am having a terrible time figuring out what to wear. I have a hideous patch of spider veins just above my right knee which has not yielded to treatment by a dermatologist, so a skirt or dress that hits at or above the knee is out. I don't think pantyhose would be an option in the summer, at the beach. (Do people even wear pantyhose anymore?) I don't tan, so I won't have darker skin to camouflage the spider veins.

I ordered a long (ankle length), very plain linen skirt, thinking it would solve my dilemma, but I felt frumpy the instant I tried it on.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

I just happened to be looking at a catalog from this place today http://www.softsurroundings.com/Clothing/Dresses/
and thought to myself that I would wear many of their dresses and skirts to a summer wedding.
--I'm located in Western PA.   --I found NC in late 2004, CG since February 2005, joined the forums in May 2005, started going grey in late 2005.   --My hair is 3B with some 3A, currently at mid back length when dry,  texture-medium/fine, porosity-top is low, middle is medium, ends are porous, elasticity-normal.   --My long time favorite products are Suave & VO5 conditioners, LA Looks Sport Gel, coconut oil, honey, vinegar.

They have some really pretty styles. I don't think any of the dresses will work for me because the colors that look good on me don't match the styles that are appropriate for this occasion (darn!), but I am looking at the skirts, too. Thanks for the link!

I was looking at this dress as well. I think the full skirt might cover my problem area when I sit.

I think it may be too formal for a beachy wedding, though.

That's a great dress. I think if it was worn with some natural accessories - woven grass belt and purse, woven sandals, shell jewelry - it would look great at a beach wedding.

I found out that the wedding is going to be fairly formal, so that Talbot's dress would be fine. I went ahead and ordered it. I hate spending that much on a dress I'll only wear once, but I can always consign it.

I hope it works! It is so hard for me to find clothes that meet all my requirements, including color. I look best in earthy, "autumn" colors (yea, I know I'm dating myself with the Color Me Beautiful lingo), and those are hard to find in spring and summer clothes.

Did you get the brown color? What ya gonna wear with it? We expect pics. : )

Yes, I ordered the brown. I'm already stressing out thinking about trying to find shoes, and I haven't even tried on the dress yet. ;-) I have zero fashion sense!

I'm going to a niece's beach wedding in late August. I mulled over lots of ideas at to what I should wear and finally decided on this outfit:

I can't see your dress, but brown should be as nice on the beach as any other color. And could have quite a tropical vibe with the right accessories.
You don't want heels sinking into the sand so keep that in mind when shoe shopping. I'm planning to wear simple flat brown leather sandals.
I've had the most trouble deciding what kind of bag to carry. I've looked at everything from straw to leather and still have not made up my mind 100%.

    P.S. I'm a CMB "Summer"

Pretty outfit! I couldn't figure out what "CMB" means until I read upthread. Duh! (I am a "fall," by the way.)

The Talbots dress didn't work for me. Even the 2 petite was too big.

My niece's wedding is at the beach, but not on the beach. I am told that the dress will be like that for any other late afternoon/evening wedding. I chose a just-above-the-knee black pencil skirt and ruffly top (very dark tealish green--not 80s teal!) from Banana Republic. (I don't usually go for ruffles, but they seem to be "in" right now.) I am not thrilled about the short skirt, but longer ones made me feel frumpy. I am going to have to wear pantyhose to disguise my spider veins. It seems that stores still sell pantyhose, so some people must still wear them! ;-)

Posting again in the hope that someone will see this new post and reply.

Assuming I must wear pantyhose (with my legs, trust me, I MUST!), and given the outfit described above, wouldn't flesh-colored hose (as close to my natural skin tone as possble) be best? No one wears black hose anymore, do they?
  • curlypearlcurlypearl Registered Users Posts: 12,231 Curl Connoisseur
Verity, can you cover up the spider veins with some makeup that doesn't have much oil in it, before putting on the panty hose? I've done that. I also wear sheer off-black panty-hose to combat the spider veins. I don't see why you can't do that especially in the evening. Hanes makes an off black that's not too expensive and not too dark.

If you can find a thick makeup for oily skin (so it doesn't have much oil) or a good concealer that isn't greasy that should help a lot. You'll have to smear a lot of it on - I put it on my entire leg from above the knee down and make sure it dries before putting on panty hose. Don't pick an orangy color - pick a light color and put it on all over front and back. I hope that helps!
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

I've used the spray on leg makeup/cover whaterver it is from Sally Hansen and it works pretty well.

I would wear black hosiery with a black skirt for an evening affair. I wouldn't just buy grocery store hose though. Department stores sell much nicer hose in really soft/sheer black shades.

    Thanks for the ideas!

I've tried makeup on my legs--absolutely doesn't work for me because I am so pale. Makeup dark enough to cover anything would not match my skin.

I'll probably will buy nude and black and decide that day.
