Aloe overload?

plunkybugplunkybug Posts: 2,526Registered Users
I think that my hair likes aloe, but I wonder if I may be going a little gung ho on it lately. What would my hair be doing if it was in aloe overload?

Are you using a product with aloe and other ingredients, like AOMM? Or just straight aloe?

My hair loves aloe. I do fine with SAJ, but AOMM has panthenol in it which overconditions me.

Solid, how do you use (and how much do you use) of the SAJ? I got some in the Essential Wholesale Co-op, but the first time I used it, I was underwhelmed. (And, may I say that I <3 your new avatar?)

Plunky, sorry to guano all over your thread. I obviously have no guidance, but will be watching the answers!

I use it as my "base coat" under Eco or mousse. I just scrunch in a quarter or so worth. I love it--it seems to tame frizz and encourage curl.

(p.s. just posted something to you in the "what did you 2's do to your hair today" thread)

Oops, plunky, I kind of misread your original question. I have no idea what hair on aloe overload looks like! But if your aloe product has other ingredients in it, those are more likely to be culprits of some hair tragedy, I would imagine.

Solid, I have products that contain aloe, but just bought some FOTE after trying some at my friend's house. So, for example, I might have used CFT Creme Brule and Goddess Curls Gel (which both have aloe) when I wash and style, then later on (or the next day) I might add some FOTE to dry hair as a refresher to help define and reshape the wurls, with maybe some frizz reduction. Alternately, I might use SS CEJ and SS FHG (the SS CEJ is aloe based and the SS FHG has aloe powder) for my styling. The sample of the Wheatgrass Fixing Gel from The Body Shop has aloe as a top ingredient too, and some of my shampoos and conditioners have aloe. I'm wondering if that's too much aloe and how I'd know if I was getting too much.

Hmmm. I don't know if there's any such thing as too much aloe! I haven't experienced it yet, and I use at least one aloe product each time I do my hair and to refresh. Have you experienced anything that might make you think you have too much aloe going on?

I'm fairly certain too much aloe makes my hair dirty more quickly and seem coated, almost oily? (hard to explain) Aloe appears to add a type of moisture my hair was missing. I have to use it in very small amounts (dime size of ew saj, but I may cut back). I seem to get too much aloe easily.
My hair is having lots of issues at the moment. I had a bad reaction to something in aohr and can't seem to wash it out of my hair. :( Because of this, I don't have a clear take on the aloe.

Thanks Ped...I appreciate what feedback you've given.

Solid, I asked as my hair was feeling blah. It seemed maybe a little drier and frizzier than normal, though initially it does help with the frizz and boost the curl. It was just feeling kinda dull and I wondered if it could be the FOTE aloe which is the new addition.

Hmmm. I got nothin'. I guess all I can contribute is that I haven't had any problems with aloe... I haven't tried any of the CFT products, but I wonder if those are more likely to cause dryness? There are some threads on the CFT line around.

I don't know if the fote was actually drying my hair or not, but I used it a few times and my hair would feel dry with the fote in it. Here is a thread a posted a while back on fote vs other aloe products. Not a super informative thread, but goob has some interesting input.

Thanks Ped! The thread was great. I think it might be drying me out, though I didn't use FOTE yesterday, just the Body Shop gel (but that has aloe in it and I think it is pretty high up) and my hair is feels dry and has lots of frizz and almost feels a little gummy. The frizz could just be the rain and humidity. OTOH, I can't recall feeling dry like this when I first tried the FOTE at my friend's house and I don't recall feeling dry at all when I was using my SS CEJ with SS FHG over it. I think I am going to use the DDMT when I wash next. And I might hold off on using the FOTE a bit, but make sure I have a good amount of leave in under it.

The way I understand it, FOTE can dry your hair in a way that other aloe products can't because of the additives.

Plunky, you might check your Body shop gel. I kept wanting to try all their hair stuff but I couldn't find any without cones. And having just fought off the cone demons in my hair that might be the problem. I've been using FOTE and it does make my hair seem a little dry, or maybe stiff would be a better descriptor. But only while wet. Once it's dry, my hair is much softer.
Hair type: 2a/b, medium to fine texture, medium to high porosity (I think!)
Routine: Occasionally wash with Lavender baby shampoo. CO wash with Garnier triple nutrition conditioner, use a nickel sized blob as a leave in, scrunch out a little water, scrunch in some aloe gel (FOTE), then scrunch in some Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (BRHG). Plop with a backwards turbie twist for 10 min - to overnight.
CG since 23 May 2009! (with some minor slips)

    Wheatgrass Fixing Gel:

Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Propylene Glycol, VP/VA Copolymer, Pentylene Glycol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, VP/Acrylates/Lauryl Methacrylate Copolymer, Dimethicone Copolyol, Panthenol, Caprylyl Glycol, Parfum, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Collinsonia Canadensis Extract, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Sodium Chloride, Lophophyrum Elongatum Extract, Oryzopsis Miliacea Extract, Benzophenone-2, Disodium EDTA, Hexyl Cinnamal, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Geraniol, Laurtrimonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Citronellol, Biotin, Sodium Hydroxide.

It should be CG. The peg-castor oil and dimethicone copolyol are supposed to be water soluble. Aloe is pretty high on the list, but I suppose there could be other items in it that are harsh and drying (or that simply don't work for my hair) that I am unaware of.

While dimethicone copolyol is technically CG/Water soluable, in my experience it can be drying so that may be the culprit. I would suspect it or the peg modified castor oil first over the aloe. FOTE feels drying to me too, but it's not the aloe, it's the additives with me as well. D. Copolyol gives me the drysies every time, and depending on the peg modified castor it will too....I have to be careful with it.

My old Biolage Defining Elixir had dimethicone copolyol and I don't recall my hair feeling dry with it. Next time I use either, I'm going to use a healthy dose of leave in and see what happens.

I wonder what the pH of FOTE is. Anyone who has it have any pH sticks? I don't have any of this in my house or I'd try it myself.

Hmmm. I don't know. I wouldn't even know where to find PH strips, or I'd test it. Would that cause it to be drying? I don't think I had any trouble with dryness with your CEJ...so I don't think aloe itself is the issue. Might just be the FOTE and Body Shop gel formulations/additives. But I could swear I was alright with the FOTE when I first tried my friends...maybe I was just super moisturized, or maybe it is a change in the weather here.

Well, I'm curious about the pH because the ingredient list is pretty harmless and I can't figure out why it would cause dryness. If you were sensitive to aloe then other products you use would likely give you the same dryness problem. The FOTE is not specifically made to be a hair product (I don't think..someone correct me if I'm wrong) so that's why I was wondering about the pH. I'm so curious about it that I'm going to go get some of this just so I can test it! I'll report back later...

Interesting to get input from someone who knows about hair product ingredients.
FOTE is designed as an after sun skin product. I think it is used primarily to treat sunburn (at least that is what I use it for).

no idea what the PH is for FOTE but it does say on the bottle that it can be used as a Hair Styling Gel. I've read a lot of people that have an Aloe aversion on these threads. I remember jilipoo blogged about Aloe and how diverse it can be. Some people's hair can become brittle from using it.
