Re:coil... CG friendly?

Hello...

Does [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Recoil-p-24.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-recoil-curl-activator]re:coil[/buylink] contain cones? Just wondering as its had some rave reviews but it contains Methyl-chloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone?

Also... i brough some Suave aloe vera the other day but the ingredients list frightens me! Lots of non-natural sounding things and not sure if i want to try it... has anyone used this as part of a CO routine as is it definately cone free?

Thank you!!
fine 3b curls and spirals - first goal BSL!!

HG's - Body Shop Honey shampoo & conditioner and Shea Moisture leave-in condish which gives me lovely frizz-free bouncy curls. My PJ is calling me to experiment with gels again... argh!

The _one's are preservatives. Both of those are cone-free and CG friendly.

What's "CG"? and what are "cones"???
  • HalfWavyHalfCurlyHalfWavyHalfCurly Registered Users Posts: 907
CG stands for "Curly Girl", the book which originated the no-shampoo routine. Cones is an informal abbreviation for silicones which should not be used in this routine as they can cause build-up that only strong shampoos can remove.

We carry Recoil in my salon, but as a curly girl myself and a specialist in curly hair I just recommend using the Ange'll by DevaCurl. The whole line is wonderful. Sometimes Recoil can build up and also be to greasy and hard to just rinse out of the hair!!

Actually, I think the Suave conditioners are wonderful, especially for co-washing. My favorite was the old Milk & Honey. I have 9 bottles of it under my bathroom sink, which I bought when I heard they were getting reformulated.

I'd love to give angell a go but i'm in the UK and postage is ridiculous!! Seems we're a little behind things with the whole curly revolution in the UK, i'm desperately trying to find a curly friendly salon and good products without paying over the odds for postage and its tricky!!

Hmm, I thought I should come back and sort of contradict myself. Even though I'm CG I've used 'cones at different times and did not had a problem with build up. Some oils, especially some essential oils, have the ability of breaking down not only 'cones but other plastic resins used in gels and hair sprays. :)

Yep, why? I was under the impression that Suave was curly hair friendly. Just because some hair products are super pricy doesn't make them better than good old dirt cheap Suave, White Rain, V05. I love Suave Aloe Vera to condition wash with.

Best? :? That's quite a stretch! Even though I haven't tried any of the "pricy" ones I wouldn't say that, cheap COs are cheap for a reason, they contain very little of the good ingredients they list. I remember years ago reading Paula Begoun's book with reviews of most drugstore/salon hair products and she said Suave's formulas varied very little so if you try one it's almost like you've tried them all. So I'd say they're barely acceptable for some and totally intolerable for many others.

I started out with Suave Coconut and Lavender because I already had them, and my results went from poor to disastrous because they don't detangle well and when I added more I ended up with a gummy mess that I had to clarify right away. Later on I went ahead and tried the Chamomile CO but it was just so-so, now it's been over 2 years since I last touched any Suave COs. Of the cheap COs I had better luck with White Rain's "Enriching Sunflower" and one from VO5 that was discontinued and the Kiwi & Lime for washing only.

I would take the testimony of dozens of curlies with beutiful hair over Paula Begoun's book, especially considering that I've seem Paula give some really bad advice. Barely acceptable for just some? So many curlies on here use Suave and VO5 conditioners. I would say that's better than barely acceptable for a lot more than just some people. Obviously Suave didn't work for YOU, but I think you are hardly qualified to make such general statements about what is and isn't acceptable for other people's hair.

As I told you already in another thread, if they're working for you fine, but I AM qualified. I am a licensed Cosmetologist, have been doing CG since the book came out in 2002 AND I've helped countless curlies in these forums have nice hair through the years. I just returned but I was very active in these boards since probably long before you ever knew they existed, so I've seen MORE curlies who had a bad time using Suave than you could possibly have seen with nice hair.

I had to use Suave and Vo5 when I was first out of school and could barely afford the rent... it was better than nothing but there's no way I would go back to it now. Which isn't to say I'm not jealous of curlies that are able to get great results with such an inexpensive product!

suave and vo5 vand pantene just to name a few have mostly animal fats and waxes to condition the hair. they build up on the hair very easily and then do more harm than good by causing breakage and more frequeny split ends, not to mention if you causes limpness and lifeless curls. i am only stating this because i am also a licenced cosmetologist and i do reserch to help my clients!!!! I research by what works best for my clients and myself and reading ingredient lists and much much more! I am just saying take care of your hair.

    Dayum, lots of Suave hate!

I've used Suave for C/O washing and have had great results - just as good as the DevaCare, but without the cone I need to get rid of from their stuff.

To the girl who wanted proof in ingredients: I am a licenced cosmetologist and I am in charge of working with a chemist for my salons line of products. I also love the DevaCurl line. That doesn't mean I am against other professional products. Drugstore brands are a different story. I do thorough research on what my clients are using on their hair. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. I am always willing to prove to someone why Sauve or Vo5 are adding cheap chemicals or fillers to their products. You wear your hair everyday. You also drive your car everyday. You spend 30 dollars putting gas in that car and you take care of your car. Why not spend 4 or 5 more dollars for good haircare??? Us curly girls have a hard time anyway. If those products work for you than fine, but I am trying to help all of the curly girls out there, not to argue with anyone. Thank You.

    Vo5 conditioner -

WATER- Is in most conditoners. 45-70% of conditioner is water.

QUATERNIUM-18- Known to cause skin irritations, chemical releases formaldehyde, also used in houshold cleaning products.

CETYL ALCOHOL, also known as 1-hexadecanol and palmityl alcohol, is a solid organic compound and a member of the alcohol class of compounds. Its chemical formula is CH3(CH2)15OH. At room temperature, cetyl alcohol takes the form of a waxy white solid or flakes. It belongs to the group of fatty alcohols.

The cetyl alcohol derives from whale oils or fats.

DIMETHYLAMINE- A liquid flammable gas. Dimethylamine is produced by catalytic reaction of methanol and ammonia.

ASCORBIC ACID-(THIS IS GOOD, BASICALLY VITAMIN C) is an organic acid with antioxidant properties.

STEARYL ACIDIt is a fatty acid and is classified as both a sulfonic acid and a fatty acid. Derives from animals.

GLYCERYL STEARATE- A fatty acid derived from plants. An emollient and emulsifier.

STEARETH-20-It is classed as an alkoxylated alcohol and is used as a cleaning, emulsifying and solubilizing surfactant. It is also known as PEG-20 Stearyl Ether. Animal derived. (Basically a sulfate or detergent)

DIMETHICONES- Are unmodified silicones, help in combing and detangling. (Great for us curly girls)

    OLEAMINE OXIDE- Animal derived surfectant.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL- Also animal derived used as a moisturizer.

    Polyvinylpyrrolidone PVP-a water-soluble polymer.

DISODIUM EDTA- Chelating agent made from salts. (Basically strips hair)

You do realize that you're posting in the "shampoo-less" forum, right? You're telling us unmodified silicones are good, when we would need a shampoo to get them out. :?

I had thought that some of the cetyl alcohols were vegetable based nowadays. I know that the stuff I bought from theherbarie.com (I'm going to play with making my own condish post-holidays) was vegetable based. It's the same for their stearls also.

Let me rephrase that, not enough to fade color. The high glycerine conditioners cause some color fading. I don't color my hair anymore so I don't have to worry about that.
We don't use the conditioners that have problem ingredients. We don't use every single Suave conditioner. The naturals line is what most use but not all of course.

I have pics up so the fact that my hair isn't dried out and damaged from the ones I use is obvious.

On that dimethicone cone in particular , nasty stuff, it coats the hair and robs it of it's ability to get moisture unless you use a sulfate poo to get it out.

I realize that arguing is more fun than helping those that ask for it without being argumentative or sanctimonious but since it's old, it was old 3 years ago when I left the board because of it so, you and the other suave hater can have this board. I'll go back to answering questions on all the other ones and sharing my experiences and asking for help on them.
