UPDATE spinoff: Is there a mousse that is nondrying?

curlypearlcurlypearl Posts: 11,970Registered Users Curl Novice
I started a thread about finding a volumizing gel, but since mousse seems to be the answer to volumizing, I wondered what the pjs think are the best mousses. I didn't like Herbal Essence mousse which I found very sticky and drying, and same for Curlisto gel mousse which was even worse.

Original Sprout (made for children) sounds promising and so does Joico joiwhip. I read about these two in the products review section - any rabid fans of these mousses or other mousses - out there?

The most moisturizing (or least drying, depending on the way you look at it) mousse I've used was probably Joiwhip.

Another good one is Paul Mitchell's Scultping Foam, which I found to be somewhat moisturizing. It's hard to describe, but it's like the Joiwhip & Sculpting Foam are "creamier" than drugstore mousses.

That being said, my favorite mousse is the Pantene Curls mousse because I find it has better hold. The Pantene is definitely more comparable in texture to Joiwhip & PM than to the HE mousses (which are way too airy/sticky). I've never thought it was drying, but I know other people on the boards have, so it's probably a hair type/property thing.

    HTH!
    2a/2b/2c - I've experienced them all

Still not sure about porosity/protein... my hair takes forever to dry & products often weigh it down, but I like protein. Thus I'm confused.

I use Pantene Texture mousse foaming wax. It doesnt leave my hair crunchy or dry. Ive been using it for about 1 year now.

I'd agree with LightWaves on the Joiwhip and PM mousses, I find them both creamy and not at all drying. Joiwhip is a staple in my cupboard, very consistent.
I recently bought some David Babaii mousse but it's not good, way too airy and doesn't seem to do anything for my curls at all.

Thank you all very much for responding. This a.m. I tried Mop-C curl cream followed by BRHG and it is a total disaster. I have to get some other type of product. My hair is so crunch I can't even SOTC. Ramen noodles all over. I dread going out. Hat time!

I will experiment with at least 2 of the mousses (and maybe all) that you mention because I am desperate to find a solution.

    Gracias amigas!

Can anyone who has the Pantene mousse please list the ingredients? :toothy1:

I'm wondering if it's CG and how high on the list is the panthenol, if any. I'm very sensitive to it.

    TIA~~~

I'm not CG - tried it and failed for two years. My scalp hates it.

It is CG, but unfortunately the Pantene Curls mousse does have panthenol :

Water, Isobutane, Polyquaternium-4, Propane, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Panthenol, Propylene Glycol, C9-11 Pareth-8, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid.

Hey Deodand--I am sensitive to panthenol too, and I found out by using [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curly-Hair-Solutions-Conditioner-338-oz-p-185.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=curly-hair-solutions-conditioner]CHS conditioner[/buylink]--it instantly made my hair limp. What does panthenol do to you? What do you do to get around it? I've found that by using more protein I can handle more panthenol.

Sorry for the guano. For what it's worth, I love the HETT mousse.

Aussie's Catch The Wave mousse is good and not drying. I like it when my hair is shoulder length or shorter.

Thanks Speckla. I bought the Joiwhip and Pantene curls mousse. I couldn't find any others which is just as well! I have to curb this pjism, although I can return any that I don't use. If I'm not happy with the Joiwhip I'll try the Pantene and unless that is terrific, eventually I'll probably succumb and try the Aussie.

Solidgold - just goes to show all our hair is so different. I tried the HETT mousse a long time ago and my hair hated it. I should have tried to swap it.

    Thanks for responding!

Hi Solidgold - Too much panthenol gives me raised swollen areas on my scalp that feel like someone's using a drill on my skull. I particularly have to watch out for it in shampoos, which is why I'm not using CHS's products at that stage. If it's low enough in the ingredient list or late enough in my process, I can get away with some.

I figured out why I've been getting ramen noodles with everything I use - gels and now mousse. I tried the Joiwhip and got the same ramen noodles. It looked horrible when dry, and experimenting, I scrunched in some [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel-p-941.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel]CJ Aloe Fix[/buylink].

Great improvement! I think what I need to do from now on is use a curl cream or something like the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel-p-941.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel]Aloe Fix[/buylink], and use smasters technique - diffuse until 50% and then use just a touch of a gel or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. Otherwise, these hard hold gels and also the mousse make stringlets of my hair. I need softer products.

Oh, that's terrible! Panthenol is in just about everything, so it must be hard to find the right products.
