Which gel increases volume?

Can you recommend a gel that increases volume? I use CJ CCCC with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] on top and sometimes BRHG for control. I like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] for curl formation but it flattens my curls. I know it's partly a question of not using too much, but I'd still like to try something else.

All the pj's out there, have you found something great for volume? Mousse seems to dry my hair but maybe there's a brand that is moisturizing. I used to have thick hair but as I've gotten older it thinned, and in one place where I had surgery it's very thin - hopefully it will grow in better.

I've looked on the thinning hair board but didn't find the answer to this question. Suggestions welcome!

I've switched back to mouse briefly in my quest for big hair. Gel just ain't getting it done. Right now I am using up an old can of HE Body Envy but I find it drying as well.

I'm going to try and find a mousse that comes in a pump container again (like foaming hand soap) - I had one before that was not CG. The propellants they put in pressurized-can mousse are hard on the hair.

I'm not CG - tried it and failed for two years. My scalp hates it.

Thanks Deodand. I always thought it was the alcohol that was drying in mousse. A lot of people seem to like Joico Joiwhip mousse which doesn't contain alcohol. I might start a thread about that. If you come up with anything, please post it!

Gel will not build volume as much as how U use it builds the volume... Mousse is generally a better big hair builder.
Have a look at mine on this site. It is the foaming pump type you are seeking...

If it builds volume, then it's gonna be drying. Gels are not meant to build volume. They're meant to give more form and control. Mousse is more meant for that, but it will dry the hair.

Volume will decrease if you go for more formed, clumpy curls. If you want volume, break up the clumps and fluff the hair more in the drying process. It will mean more frizz, but that's part of the equation, too. Hair in clumps is heavier and more contained--less volume. Hair in more stingy form and more poufy = more volume.

I tend to let my hair be clumpier on first day, maybe second day, but at times by second day (and third for sure) I'll finger-comb it out and shake it and pouf it up, and get a lot more volume. But that also means less defined curls and more frizz-pouf.

So, you can generally have one or the other, but not both. And if you use a product like Mousse with hold and volume-building properties, then you will need to moisturize well to counteract the drying effect. (Although being overmoisturized will decrease volume, too, as it adds weight to hair. Dry hair is lighter, hence more volume.)

If you just want a bit more volume at root/crown, then you can just target mousse there and use clips to lift the hair while it dries.

Yep, that's what I've found, too. I do the same thing--wear it the first day or so sleek and gelled and frizz-free, then finger comb it for volume and wildness.

I get great volume from [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel-p-941.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel]CJ Aloe Fix[/buylink] gel. It's not hard holding, which may be the reason for the volume. I'd try it before mousse if gel is your preference.

I do well with Fuzzy Duck gel, by MopTop. I've tried lots of other gels and mousses, but I always come back to Fuzzy Duck.

(I layer it with other products, though.)

Thank you tonsofcurlz and Ninjadog! I actually have a sample of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel-p-941.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel]aloe fix[/buylink] and I used it last summer but I think at the dewpoints were so high that it wasn't a good product for me then. But now it might be just what I need. Thank you for recommending it.

Ninja - What products do you layer under Fuzzy Duck? I just tried Mop-C under BRHG and it's a total disaster. I can't even SOTC - crunchy ramen noodles. An experiment that failed.

Have you tried Spiral Solutions yet? I find that when I use a combination of the Curl Enhancing Jel and Firm Hold Gel, I have nice volume. My curls really sping with this stuff! It doesn't give you the crunch that BRHG does. All that it requires is a light scrunch out and it leaves your curls soft and springy. There are times that I will add a pea sized amount of BRHG on top when I need extra hold. Even using BRHG after doesn't effect the softness and volume for me. Now, bear in mind that I can take heavy products without my curls being weighed down. So, it may be different for you. Perhaps you can try a sample from kathymack? HTH.:)

Actually, I already have a sample of Spiral Solutions CEJ from Kathymack - so I'm trying that for sure! I don't have any of the firm hold gel, though. But I will try the CEJ with maybe a lighter gel on top or a touch of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] and report back.

    Thanks so much for responding!:blob:

I can't use Spiral Solutions because I am in Canada and the shipping rates aren't worth it. She charges $26.95 to ship a pot of gel to Canada.

The alcohol in mousse is the biggest drying culprit - but I can get away with it since my hair is virgin and pretty tough.

curlypearl, I forgot to mention another favorite gel that I use over CEJ. I got this from FrizzBgone. KMS Cranberry and Pepper gel. It's not as firm hold as BRHG and really controls the frizz. There's a thread on it under product reviews.

Yeah, I did a double take when I saw that. I sent a message on the etsy site and it was explained that etsy was somehow calculating the shipping this way. If your shipping is less than $26.95, she said the difference would be refunded. I'm waiting to check my visa statement to see how much will be refunded. I'm really hoping the shipping won't be so high. I really like this stuff, but can't justify that much for shipping.
Sorry for being off topic curlypearl.
