trying to decide between kinky curly, curl junkie and jessicurl

I've read the reviews on all 3 brands and i'm soooo confused as to which I should purchase to go CG. I have curly hair that gets really frizzy when it dries and it's almost brittle and dry to the touch. My hair starts out curly then ends up flat. I'm looking for something that will give me great curls but not completely weigh it down so it's limp. Also random question how exactly do you scrunch out the crunch?

To be honest, all three brands are pretty good, all work differently, and all have their time and place. I'm a bit of a Curl Junkie junkie, but I like KC as well and Jessicurl of the three is probably my least favorite. There's no way of knowing exactly which would be best for your hair without knowing porosity, texture, and elasticity, and even then sometimes things can perform in unexpected ways. If you're just starting CG, I'd start out with cheaper products. you'll go through them quickly and probably end up needing to switch products around - neither of which is good when you're dealing with things that cost upwards of $15 a bottle. In theory, all three brands could give you precisely what you're after - moisture and control - and it's tempting to want to jump into the deep end with the specialised products. But if I were you I'd start out cheap and simple - Suave/VO5, a heavier rinse-out, and a clear gel, and then once you get an idea of what your hair likes or dislikes, start in with the expensive stuff.

As far as scrunching out the crunch goes, after applying products that can give me crunch (gel, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curls-in-a-Bottle-p-995.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curls-in-a-Bottle]CIAB[/buylink], etc), I wait for my hair to get to about 70-85% dry, and then gently scrunch until my curls are soft. Some people wait until their hair is fully dry but I find that can take too long and scrunching earlier aids in drying. :-) Some people also use a pomade to SOTC to control any residual frizz, but I've always found it makes things worse.

    Hope that helps some!

I tried going CG like last year I used suave naturals and lvpng with totally twisted gel and it was okay. My hair sometimes went limp and frizzy. I also felt like i had this weird film on my hair when i touched it.

Agree with oddityofwings that it's good to know Texture and Porosity. You can read Struttswife's thread by that name in the Newby Forum or go to her website and read there: http://www.livecurlylivefree.com/ Her ebook is a good investment with all of the information in one place. After you determine your texture and porosity, look for people with hair like yours and stalk them on the boards. Look at their products (in signature) and what they do.

I was never really into the drugstore products. I started out with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-LowPoo-p-54.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacurl-lowpoo]Deva LowPoo[/buylink]/One C about three years ago. That lasted for a bit, added the Angell (now I wouldn't use it if you paid me.) When my hair satiated on those products, I tried the whole Jessicurl line--that made my hair limp and lifeless in a week. The rest is history. I went through just about everything. I'm a real pj, but have used CJ consistently for over two years. The only Kinky Curly product I used and loved was the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], it's a must try product. Other then that, there are a ton of fabulous products available.

You can probably use just about anything. Fine hair usually loves protein, so you don't have to worry about that. Many of rotate products because our hair satiates if we use any one thing too much. I wet and style every day, seldom using any one thing more then twice a week.

If your hair is fine and you're dry, brittle and limp, you may need a good, solid protein deep tx, followed by a deep condish tx.

My recommendation is that you clarify, then (again, if you are really fine, then protein will prolly be your best friend) PDT, then CDT.

After that, I'd recommend you use a system (ie, first try a complete system from ONE line). Usually, products are meant to be used together.

With the KC, it's three things--the come clean poo, the knot today leave-in, the curling custard. I find the Come Clean is very strong and lathering, and it serves like a clarifier for me.

With Curl Junkie (my fave line), you should go to their website, read up on it NOW, SEE the chart on what is recommended for fine hair, and try stuff after reading reviews here and on CurlMart and on Curl Junkie's site. If you nopoo, Daily Fix is great (but read how to do it properly with lots of water addition). If you have frizz issues and dry hair, you can use the Smoothing Condish as a rinse out or get the Curl Rehab, which can triple-play as rinse out, leave in (for ends and dry bits), and a deep weekly treatment. I strongly recommend the Curls in A Bottle for curl definition. I also like the CCCC Lite for second day frizz control and moisturizing.

Curl Junkie's Easter sale starts tomorrow, so you can try stuff at 20% off. I'm gonna stock up myself. :) (As long as shipping is not insane.) Code: EASTER2010

Jessicurl has a nice gentle lather low-poo and a great weekly deep condish, and many people like the RR and CC combo for curl enhancement. I tried it and it was fine, but the only things I still use from the line are the lowpoo and the weekly deep treatment (WDT). I recommend you get unscented, as both her scents kinda suck.

Of the three, I recommend Curl Junkie as it is not just good and healthful for hair, but it's got the least complicated learning curve (KCCC can be tricky).

Ultimately, you gotta do the research by figuring out your hair type/properties and reading up on reviews and posts by people with hair like yours to get an idea of what is benefitting whom. You may not like the first line you try, but you gotta start somewhere. :)

Me, I recommend Curl Junkie. Stuff rocks.

But read up on deep protein/deep condish combo. YOu may need that first. I've used the Spiral Solutions Protein and DD condish, Joico K-Pak (my fave) with Intense Hydrator, and CurlFix with Curl Rehab. All are nice.

i'm considering the curl assurance gentle cleansing shampoo, curl assurance smoothing conditioner and curls in a bottle

Since they're gonna discontinue it, and it's cheaper now (by like half), might wanna consider the leave-in. I find it does not weigh me down and with the CCCC Lite for subsequent days, my dry and frizzy hair stays soft and moisturized.

I love the smell of the Smoothing Condish, but I don't find it has enough conditioning power for me. I dunno why. I've been using the Curl Rehab for rinse out, or just using the CA Leave-In without a rinse out. Since I precondish every time I wash and do a dt every week, I am better moisturized now and don't seem to need the oodles of rinse-out and leave-in like I used to.

Oh, and as I mentioned on another thread, because the shipping is so high at the Curl Junkie site, and you gotta buy 50 bucks worth to get the 20% off, I found the discount got all eaten up by the shipping. (Mine ended up being 12+ bucks for shipping). The only reason I bought was cause what I wanted to stock up on was the discontinued stuff mostly, and that was like half off and made up for the crappy shipping.

If what you want to buy is the regular price stuff--CIAB, smoothing condish--then you're better off with CurlMart with a 15% off and 8 dollar shipping or Avenue You with a 15% off (and $1 shopping if you make it to 50 bucks, which with CJ, means about 4 items).

Shop around. No reason to pay more than ya hafta.

    Go here: http://www.curljunkie.com/Sales-s/21.htm

Other than the sample packs, check on the rest of the items. You'll see a note by the price saying if it's discontinued.

Nope, its a styler with the consistency of a serum that's a curl and shine booster. It can be combined with other CJ products and I've heard of a few people using it alone (if they have fine hair) because it is also quite moisturizing. CIAB also plays well over other gels and makes them perform even better. I experienced this myself when I combined it with ecostyler. Totally made me take it (the gel) out of the graveyard. CIAB is a must have staple far as I'm concerned.

Is four hours typical?? was it with or without product? Before I used product, it took my naked hair (and it's not very dense) that long to dry, even with a little diffusing.

I don't think the water test is that accurate. Next time you get a haircut, ask your stylist if you can't figure it out.

Four hours air drying, without diffusing at all, wouldn't be unusual for any curly. If I used gel and didn't do CLU towels, or diffusing--it would take my hair forever to dry. And I don't have a lot of hair.

CIAB is a serum styler that conditions, defrizzes and clumps the curls while adding shine. I use it over my more protein based gels( i.e: Ecostyler Krystal) to give more moisture and punch it up a bit. Some finer haired curlies can use CIAB alone.
