Becoming a curly specialist

I am new to curly hair as my hair is a type 1. I am an apprentice in school, but NO ONE knows how to work with curly hair. I live in a small town in Virginia and there are not many places to learn. Any suggestions? Are there any schools or specialized training?

Schools, doubt it. Specialized training, yep. But you'll have to travel to where the training is. Deva and Ouidad both have special training in their respective cutting techniques (ie, dry cut for Deva and carve and slice for Ouidad). Ouidad certification is a two day program. Don't know how long Deva's is (although I heard it could be a one day training, but not suer if I heard right). Jonathan Torch (frizzoff; famous for the skip curl technique and Curlkeeper, etc) has the Curly Hair Institute. I don't know if that's short-term or holistic training. http://www.frizzoff.com/

Might want to look now, if you're willing to move, into some sort of apprenticeship (after you're licensed), ie, go work in a salon where the stylist(s) specialize in curls and learn their techniques. Maybe you can ask/email Struttswife about how she got trained or if she can recommend resources. She's a curly hair specialist and people travel cross-state to get cut by her in Florida.

Hope that helps some... If I were young, I'd love to learn how to specialize in natural, non-toxic hair care and styling, and specialize in curly hair. I hate the smells of most salons (all those toxic fumes). If I had the money and energy, I'd definitely do the Green Curly Styling.
