Plopping-- the Great Experiment

Yes, I love science class, and I love to experiment. And when I experiment, I need to document it. So here is my weeklong experience with plopping!!

Day 1- Duration- Plopped for about 45 minutes, stopped for about 1hr30min, then plopped all night.
Curl definition- good. Some flat areas and wavy areas rather than curls. Body wasn't terrible.
Variables to consider- I used a nickel-sized amount Herbal Essences Totally Twisted shampoo :(

Day 2 - Duration- 30 min, then had about a 3hr45 break, then plopped all night.
Curl definition- excellent curls, awesome body. It looks exactly as it did when i went to bed, great preservation of curls.
Variables to consider- my hair was about 89% dry when I went to bed

Day 3 - Duration- 35 min, then had a 3hr30min break, then plopped all night
Curl definition- more wavy-curls, curls were just okay. Body was okay.
Variables to consider- my hair was about 90% dry, I had played with it alot b/c I went out with friends (saw Shutter Island! Such a fantastic movie!)

Day 4- Duration- all night
Curl definition- pretty curls, some were very full and botticelli-like, nice body very floaty. Problem-- the top of my hair/ part was flat.
Variables to consider- didn't plop once i got my gel in after showering, waited about 25 minutes.

Day 5- Duration- all night
Curl definition- nice and curly, smaller spirals than am used to. A little flat on top, but the part was very nice.
Variables to consider- I can't really remember! anywhere from 20 min-45 min before plopping for the night.

Day 6-Duration- all night
Curl defintion- bigger, looser curls. Sort of similar to not plopping, which makes me think that I didn't wear it for very long. I usually wake up with it not on my head! Gr.
Variables to consider- waited about 1hr before plopping.

Day 7-Duration- all night
Curl definition- flat, flat flat waves!! I am really unhappy. It took massive amounts of gel and water to force some sort of curl.
Variables to consider- waited 45min to plop. A problem that I have been facing through out this entire experiment;; the plop never stays in! I woke up at exactlty 2:22 am and the plop was out! so I blindedly groped around for the t-shirt i use and put it back in. 4 hours later, at 6:50, it was back out and my hair looked completely flat.

Final thoughts on the experiment are...
~The plop never stays in. It is really frustrating! Any tips on how to keep it in?
~ Overall, I'm not sure whether this plopping experiment was successful. I think I am going to continue to do it for at least another week before making my mind totally. What do you think? I think I had some great curl days (e.g. days 2, 4 and 5) so I might try to follow those examples.
~Should I not plop all night?

This is unrelated to the experiment, but it is just really bothering me-- everyone has such beautiful, sleek, glossy curls. No frizz at all! WHY DO I HAVE FRIZZ?!?!?!? I've gone CG, but why has my hair not gotten rid of the frizz? I'm going bonkers!

Okay, enough about that. :) Thanks for checkin' out my experiment, and if you have any answers to my questions, please lemme know!

I can't over night plop, my hair ends up a rats nest when I did this . I now only plop in the mornings when I know I have the time for it.

I'm very porous too. What helped me with the frizz is ACV rinses, they left me with a lot less frizz and nice bouncy curls.

How do you secure your plop? I use a scrunchie, twist it twice, and I never have issues with it coming out. I also sleep on my side. I should take apic after I do my hair tonight and post it, maybe you plop differently...I use a regular t-shirt.

I use a long sleeve t shirt so I use the sleeves to tie it in place. The neck part is by my forehead, I cross the sleeves at the back of my head and then bring the sleeves back around to the front and tie it at my forehead. I can go about my morning without it slipping around.

I got a small little towel from Sally's that makes plopping really easy. It's supposed to make a turban, but I find it works really well for plopping. It's velour, but I haven't found that its caused any more frizz than a t-shirt does. It has a little elastic in the back so that it stays on straight and tight as you want it.
I don't plop overnight, but I think it would probably work for you if you do! It's very secure!

As for frizz - maybe you need more moisture? Have you tried a deep treatment or a leave in?

One thing that worked for me was actually flax seed gel. I didn't find that it gave me very good hold, but it was great for controlling frizz and it made my hair really shiny too!

I haven't plopped overnight for the past two nights and still got good results. I am still undecided about how long to plop.

gncurrier- i just use an old longsleeve tshirt, similar to what adorame06 does.

stephycurl- yes, I probably need more moisture! I used to use the Bedhead DeepCondishing mint mask, but it was before I went CG, so I am not sure if it is CG-friendly. For the FSG, I need major hold to keep my curls! If I use FSG, could I still use my regular gel on top of it for hold, or would it react funny with the FSG?

I use both FSG and a strong hold CG friendly gel, it works fabulously on my curls. FSG by itself was great for the no frizz, but I need the strong hold gel to keep my curls from drooping.

Italiancurls, I <3 you. This thread is so hilarious - totally something I would do! But very helpful at the same time! Since you are a 3a, I can say from experience that the overnight plopping just doesn't work for me. I can only do about 30 mins MAX. Any more than that either flattens them, dries them out, makes the tshirt absorb my leave-in/creme/gel, or makes them dry funky.

Just my experience - take it with a grain of salt and keep on experimenting! :D

    Awwww thanks! I <3 being <3ed :)

My plopping routine goes like this now- it depends on what time I get home from track and what time i finish homework. If I finish my homework early, then I shower, put my gel in etc then plop for 30 min. If I finish my hw later, like around 9 or 9:30ish, then I'll shower and plop all night. But even that can is like 30 minutes b/c once I'm asleep it falls out.

Plus, I've added the "icequeen method" to my repertoire (is that spelled right???) That definately helps too, because I've been relying on the plop for all my body, but since the "icequeen method" i haven't needed to rely all that heavily on it.

    Still loving plopping, though!

Yay for plopping! I've had the same results as you, wowohwow. Every time I've tried plopping overnight I've gotten flat curls with little volume! I find my hair can only take a certain amount of plopping too, until it starts doing weird things!
As far as FSG is concerned, I hope it works out for you Italian Curls! I've never found FSG to give hold either, so I guess I just use it as a sort of frizz creme thing (ha) then put regular gel on top for hold. Still experimenting myself with this!

    CUTE curls!

This was really interesting! I have issues with plopping, but I would love to experiment myself and see if I could get it to work. I just hate sitting around for 2.5 hours for it to dry!

With the frizz, how long have you been on CG? It took me about a month or two for the frizz to start dissipating and now it's practically gone. Do you have frizz when you air-dry completely without plopping?

I don't plop over night...my hair is too short...but what I do, that works for me is to keep a satin cap (from Sallys) on over night. If my hair is wet, I put a regular plastic shower cap on first, then the satin one. It stays on all night & doesn't smoosh my curls!

Thanks! High five sista! I tried out plopping just to try to get it to dry! It's helped me alot, cut down drying time by an hour.

I was a modified in Jan, but full-fledged February 2nd :) I have frizz all. the. time. Nothing changes with that!

Maybe I'll play around with plopping this weekend then! I do know that the faster your hair dries the more frizz there is likely to be, which is unfortunate because who has time for waiting around like that to avoid frizz. One trick I use sometimes though, when my hair is particularly fuzzy on a given day, is I put a *teeny* bit of conditioner in my hands (very light condish) and rub it between my palms and apply it directly to the canopy very lightly. It doesn't weigh down my hair at all or make it greasy, rather it soaks right in cause my hair is so dry! But the frizz is cut down dramatically.

Nice thread!! Im thinking about experimenting with the plopping, but i dont think i can do it all night, i suffer from migraines and i think plopping would give a headache, im also suffering with the frizz, cant seem to go away, when i airdry it i get sooo frizzy but if i stay at home then its better, but i want to have nice curls when i go out and stuff.
Very high dews (70°F or more) and lots of humidity (above 80%)
3a/3b mostly, normal porosity, medium texture (I think)

Sometimes I use: TRESemme flawless curls shampoo
    Co-wash: Suave Green Apple
    Conditioner: Garnier Fructis Oil Repair
Styling: Flaxseed gel, shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie

    Still experimenting...

I get migraines too. They are annoying, aren't they? I don't know what your triggers are, but I know that having a headband in my hair will give me a nasty one. BUT the plop doesn't give me a migraine! I think it would if I made it tight near my ears, but I tie it high on my head and it doesn't give me one.

The icequeen method is when you put in your co-wash and condish upside down, and rinse with cool water. Or at least, that is what i've come to understand it to be and what I've been doing!
