What Not to Wear - Nick Goofed!

Laura P.Laura P. Posts: 23Registered Users
Did anyone else see WNTW last Friday? A "bachelorette" was flown in to NYC from Texas for a makeover. She was very pretty, and had short, wavy hair. When she got to Nick, he said she needed a "sleek" new look and that meant straight. When he was done, she had short, pin straight hair. While she liked the highlights he did, she said she hated the straight look. Actually she what she said was that she *&*&^% hated it!

Was a bit disappointed in Nick, who usually respects a person's natural texture when considering a new look. Also, since the woman lives in Texas, much of which is hot/humid, she would have a terrible time keeping her straight look.

By the end of the show, the woman had gone back to her curls, and along with her new wardrobe, she looked fantastic.

Wow, I'm disappointed. I didn't get to watch that one b/c my stupid Tivo deleted it before I had a chance to watch it. I'm glad she didn't like the straight hair though. Too many women want their curls straightened.

Wow! You think maybe they got complaints about the curly stylist styling hair curly too often??
    OMG, LOOK!!

    ...It's a siggie.

I thought she had the right face and hair texture for the straight look that Nick gave her. In this case I think Nick did a good thing by showing her a straight option and I really liked how she looked.

I was rather envious that she has the hair type that gives her the natural curly option and a very sleek straight option -something that I cannot do. Even if I blowdry or flatiron my I will NEVER have that look.

Nope, I'm not disappointed or upset with Nick at all.

I think the next bachlorette (this Friday) also has curly hair. I hope Nick gives her a great curly style.

Hi, I haven't posted for a while, HELLO!!

I watch "WNTW" whenever I can catch it and I pretty much think that Nick is doing a great job...yes, I hate the fact that in the beginning he went "straight" crazy with the curly heads...but now, he is teaching women (and one curly headed guy) to toss the comb and use their fingers to "combe" their hair.

I think is is fabu! and to top it all off, he is a curly head himself! He is slowly but surely doing better and better with curlies!

Is that the guy from Australia (or something like that)? When I used to watch the show a couple of years ago he NEVER respected curly hair, in fact he seemed to think all curly hair had to be "tamed". I disliked that part of the show because of that.

I've been watching the show for about a year, and most of the time Nick (who is from Manchester, England) does respect curly hair's natural texture. The segment several weeks ago where he styled the curlyhead pin-straight was an exception.

 Yes, Nick did have his issues...but I blame it on the way he was taught to be a stylist...or lack of teaching I should say when it came to the subject of Curly heads.

He is doing better and I appreciate him for it...

I have so much confidence in him that I would let him cut my hair.

I have seen him style a few curlies and I tend to like the end result.

I agree about maintaining the new sleek look. That show often chops the hair in such a way it needs to stay straight, yet that' snot realistic for curlies to keep up - esp. in a hot/humid place. I'm in MD, but bought a house in NC. Both of which are VERY humid in summer. I couldn't imagine keeping a sleek, short look.

That's the only time I've ever seen Nick make that kind of sleek straight look, he usually keeps it curly. :?

And trust me, I watch the show A LOT. My mom yells at me for staying up late just to catch all the episodes!

...Nick (who is from Manchester, England)...

I was *pretty* sure that he wasn't Australian, but I couldn't figure out where in England he'd be from.

Anyway, for all I know, the producers suggested that he style curly hair straight once in a while. I think that generally, it's a very good show for learning the basics of how to shop for clothes and care for your appearance...even when you don't have product placement from Crest and Visa to help you out.

The requisite Crest White Strips Segment (C) bugs me.

That style looked great when she went back to curly. Straight, it wasn't doing it for me at all (and DH agreed--we both thought the new cut looked fantastic curly and bad straight), but it's awesome that she can wear it both ways if she did want to. I agree that he would have done well just to keep her hair curly, but really she got a great look that she can wear both ways, so it's sort of a win-win. Beautiful girl and you would never have known it with what she was wearing before.

Currently using: Whole Foods 365 Herbal Mint Conditioner (co-wash), MOP Mixed Greens Conditioner, Paul Mitchell Lite Detangler, CK, ISO Bouncy Creme. Gave up on plopping due to tangles/"stickiness" and now I just comb through products and diffuse. It looks basically as good and dries a lot faster (I wasn't getting good clumps from plopping anyway). Still wish I were a lot curlier!

I caught the WNTW episode with Ginger, one of the Austin bachelorettes this past weekend.

Nick told her (I'm paraphrasing here) that when she had a date night, she could blow dry it straight because sleek is seen as sexier.

Can I mention how unhappy I was about that comment? :x Jeez, even if it's true, no need to perpetuate something so silly.

He said it's seen as sexier, yes - but he didn't say he thought it was. Look at his own hair! He obviously doesn't think that way. I think as a hairdresser he has to get really into what's "in" for hair right now, and straight is "in." Sadly, he has transferred that to the viewers of WNTW. However, he seemed to want to avoid saying it was sexier, and we all know why. He didn't want to lie on national TV! :P

I saw that episode. Didn't they say her hair was "fried" so they had to cut it all off? She even called her mom and cried. Couldn't they have given it a bit of a trim and a good condition?
