Jaw clipping the canopy - Incredible lift and root curl!

I posted a thread on here recently about having a problem with root curl and lift. I decided to go off this website to google and see what was out there. I HAVE to recommend this site to all those with the same problem! I just got done doing my hair with this method and I have great lift, but not too much, with root curl all the way down, PLUS as an added bonus, I think pulling the hair up and into the jaw clips allowed the "under" hair (have no idea what else to call it) to curl even more! It is so pretty! I wish I had somewhere to go to show it off! My husband is even out of town and can't see it. And without him I can not take pics so we will have to do it the next time when he is here and post some. This method is going to be part of the daily routine for me now, even when just spritzing, if my hair is limp. Here is the website:

www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Curly-Girl-Method-For-Curly-Hair

It is near the end of the instructions, so keep going on the page. It is worth it though, and SO easy to do. It is called "Jaw Clipping". I had some small jaw clips anyway to pull the hair back out of my face, so I just used those that I had to do this. Does not pull the hair like clips and you can manuever the hair into the curl pattern you want before you jaw clip. With the regular clips, it would flatten everything out.

Let me know how it works for you if you try it, but it worked great for me! HTH all those who have lift and root curl issues!

Was it this method? I think I'll try this myself:

Yeah I saw that particular website too and took some from both of them, but like the wikihow one better only for the amount of info that it had. (I actually did sign up to become a member of YCLF, being a Christian myself, but signed up under the married ladies area!) I kind of did my own thing and jaw clipped in a way that I thought would work well for my hair and Wow! It worked in spades so I am really pleased, like I said, it will become part of my daily routine when lacking some lift. It is great!

Wow Libertybelle great root lift and curl! Thank you for suggesting this method. I tried it using regular clips and changed my part from the normal routine and it worked great! I think it really helps with those of us with flat crowns to switch up our parts. I'm going to get the jaw clips and see if that helps too.

    Thank you!!!! :blob2:

Since a lot of you appear to be fairly new, I thought you might not be familiar with this video. I still get about the best results clipping mine similar to this, with either [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/store/product.php?productid=151&cat=0&page=1?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Duckbill-Clips]duckbill clips[/buylink] or jaw clips - often some of both. My teenage daughter dose something like that. She uses two or three bigger claw clips on wet hair and leaves them in over night and wakes up with lots of root volume and great curls. She's able to get most of her hair piled up on top and places the claws so they don't poke her scalp while sleeping. This works for her instead of plopping. BTW she has thick 3a/3b hair that falls below her bra strap, and uses a LI and FHG.

Ok for those of you that couldn't click on that link, I am so sorry! :( Put it down to being 42 and not being that computer savvy. I was able to put into google "clipping for root curl" and that came up. Try this site, and this process is NOT in the beginning of the site. You kind of have to read down and explore this site. Sorry for that. It was late and I was going to bed, but excited about the effect!

Ok, here is how I did it. Now some of you may not like this idea or put your own twist on it. If you find a better way, PLEASE let me know, but this worked really great for me; and let me say this. I did this on Sunday night? Well it is Tuesday afternoon and it looks even better than it did the first night! I am going to explain what I did:

    1) washed with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Come-Clean-Moisturizing-Shampoo-p-844.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Kinky-Curly-Come-Clean-Moisturizing-Shampoo]KC come clean[/buylink] rinsed
    2) condish (Nature's Gate) rinsed out
    3) [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]KC Knot Today[/buylink] and DID NOT rinse
    4) [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] with the mystery flavored technique
    5) plopped for an hour (I have super long hair in the back and it is thick, I need one hour)
    6) hair was damp, I took HE Totally Twisted about a quarter size and turned my head over and scrunched some in the front and in the body of my hair
    7) flipped head back over, using the smallest jaw clips I had, I kind of, wow I don't know how to describe this, bunched my hair up about one to one and half inches of the root hair (hair is about 12" long total with some layers) into the pattern that it liked. Pressed it between two fingers to hold, jaw clipped with the smallest jaw clip I had.
    8) I DID NOT criss cross. That really messes me up. I stayed with my part.
    9) I did this from front to back. I used 6 jaws total from front to back
    10) lifting that hair also let the under hair breathe and curl more
    11) this is where it gets a little more complicated for folks that are not nurses....I had some old scrubs caps that were elastic band type only, like the type you get before surgery, made out of 100% cotton, I flipped my hair over, with the jaws still in it on top, and put all may hair up in that to get it off my neck
    12) took it out right before bed and VOILA got what you see in the pics and that really does not do it justice

I even went to bed on it and it stayed the next day all day and today all day.

I am thinking about getting some old tshirts and having my mom make me some "clipping" caps in the pattern that I have so I can clip and put the hair in the cap and work around the house or watch TV. I think that may have helped too. I remember when I worked in the OR? That I would come out after about 8 hours, and my hair would be curlier than it was before I started work due to humidity from my head (I sweat a lot in the head, very hot natured) and it would look great, grossly enough.

Whew! Ok sorry about the link and I HTH with what I put up there! Any questions feel free to send me mail. I will answer if I can!

Hey, I put a description of what I did. I just read it and it sounds like I never took a breath, but I am rearranging furniture, so I wanted to answer everybody's questions. There were no where near these replies on Monday when I checked! Sorry it took me till now, but I did it on damp hair after plopping, jaw clipped and then put a scrub hat on to get it off my neck and let it dry some more. Took it down (took the clips out) before bed and slept on it. Still looks great today.

Just FYI, I tried the criss-crossing technique and it didn't work for me. I got plenty of lift in the sides of my hair, but not enough in the top. Also the act of crossing wet hair destroys my weak curl pattern. Oh well back to the drawing board.

I am with you on the crisscrossing as well. I end up messing with my hair too much trying to get the crisscrossing done and I am pulling out any root curl I might have. I sometimes just use 2 larger jaw clips and grab both sides of the hair along my part with them and then do some diffusing and then take them out. That is is best clipping I have ever been able to do. These are the 2 inch (??) jaw clips.

I have given up on any other implements.

Hey guys, (ahem) CGs! I did not criss cross either does not work well. I thought I put that up there that I didn't? Oh well, will check. And I use the small, small jaw clips. They are probably 1/2 an inch? I don't grab a lot of hair, like I said it can be caught with index finger and thumb so that is not a wad of hair, just a small bunch. And I go straight back, from forehead to crown in a pretty straight line, not even using a part. When it comes down, I have such a strong part, that it falls into that anyway.

Sorry it didn't work for ya'll, but man it works for me. This is my second "wash" day of the week and I can't wait to do it again. I got SO many compliments on it, even from the doctors I work with and man it is hard to get them to compliment anything, being surgeons and all. They usually are so focused that they don't even notice us in Pre Op but they did notice the hair!

Again, sorry it didn't work for ya, I was hoping I had hit on something that might help! I have another idea that I am working on. My dad is a carpenter and I am going to get a 1/2 inch dowel rod cut into 1 or 2 inch sections and curl the root on it, let the rest of it hang off, jaw clip it with the 1/2 inch jaws and see what that does. I am trying to make my own root curlers. Straws do not work for me. The hair slips off. So will see what that does. I just hate those metal hair clips, they pull and break my hair. And my hair is pretty elastic, but they still do it. The jaw clipping works great for me.

I'm glad you started this post. I used to use jaw clipping a few years ago, but then cut my hair super short - too short to clip. I'm growing it back out (it's now between chin and shoulder length) and used 1.5" jaw clips yesterday. I grabbed small sections along my part, pulled straight up and clipped. I also clipped two areas on either side of my part. In total, I used 5 clips. It worked beautifully - and I've got second day hair today. Thanks for the reminder!!

I have tried so many of these jaw clips. Are they the same as the octopus clips? If not, does someone have a picture? I ask becaues the oct. clips aren't working for me. The big ones pull my hair since it's so fine (moves around too much) & the small oct. clips are too small & scrunch my hair up:(. I would like to find something that works to give me a little root lift, especially around my crazy part...
